We never said sports were bad for you, you smug git. Besides, a lot of them seem more like blind, stupid luck. They "pulled a Homer".

Deal with it
You claim to be a "sensible sportsman" but you've not been doing any particularly long or well-thought out posts. A link and three words won't give much validity to that username. Could you try and point out specific references to people saying sports are bad for you? If I ever said something along those lines please tell me and I'll attempt to justify it.

To be honest, sporting activity itself is no problem to me. It's a GAME. Just a GAME. Well, it would be if there weren't so many people who just take it way too far and start abusing and running down people who don't share the same enthusiasm or skill for what is merely a GAME. I don't like the people who live only through the achievements of sporting players they've never met in their lives. I AM TIRED of people failing to see sports for what they really are - pastimes and entertainment - and believing they're some sort of societal demand that everyone has to conform to otherwise they're deserving of abuse or exclusion. The excessive hype and respect for these mere GAMES at the cost of others' self-esteem is what bugs me the most.

That is all. I hope your next post will be a bit more reasoned and informative, SensibleSportsman. Don't make us have to get this out:

One-liner posts won't cut the cheese round here if you want to criticise us properly and have a decent dialogue. Some of us are always up for a bit of debate. Feel free to ask me any questions you might want. Sarcastic ones I'll just answer truthfully. No point in lying.

OK NonsensicalSportsman, let's just examine the article that you have linked to this topic.

These people were saved by dumb luck, plus skilled medical professionals, who without them, their lives would not have been saved.

For example, the hockey referee who was attacked by the players and ended up in the hospital where they discovered he had a brain tumor, and did surgery to remove it, thus saving his life.

He could have just as easily been in the hospital as the result of a vehicle accident. Also, being a sports referee, aren't the guys in these professions required to go for annual physical examinations?

It was the doctor, who spotted the brain tumor who saved his life, the doctor, who was a typical nerd or techno-geek in high school who studied hard in science and math, and went on to college to study medicine, he was the one who saved the referee's life! Dumb ass!

If the referee had been living in a primitive society without science and technology, he would have died in a mud hut while some witch doctor was rattling beads over him! End of story! Dumb ass!

As for the kid who almost got impaled on a fencepost, who's life was saved by wearing an expensive sports jersey, well . . . he was one dumb kid. A smart kid would have known better than to attempt to climb over a fence near a sharp post. Yes, as a kid, I sometimes climbed over fences, but only if it looked possible. For example: I would never have attempted to climb over a picket fence because of the sharp points along the top of the fence. So, he was one dumb kid who should have been in a retard home. Like you, he was a dumb ass!

And, the guy who's gymnastic skills saved him as he tumbled out of a 4th story window. First of all, he landed on a corrugated metal roof. I have heard, and read a lot of stories of people who have fallen out of buildings and have landed either on a corrugated metal roof or on top of a car and lived. You will most likely survive such a fall than you would if you land on concrete, because the metal crumples or bends under impact and absorbs most of the shock where as concrete does not. So, his gymnastic tumbling skills would not have saved his life if he had landed on concrete instead of a corrugated metal roof. Also, the guy was a moron for leaning out of the window in the first place. A smart person would have avoided leaning so far out on the edge of the window. Again, end of story! Dumb ass!

When I was going to school, mandatory PE and sports ruined my life.

No, what really saves lives is getting a good education so you can have a good paying job, and afford better health care. That save lives.

Also, science and medical technology saves lives. Without the skilled practitioners, the nerds and techno-geeks, these fools would have been goners!

So, stick that in your Gucci bag and hit the road! Dumb ass!

I love the "Deal with it" part.

Try this:

There are people out there who hate sports.

Deal with it.

The link that was posted is to CRACKED.com and it says America's only humor & video site since 1958.

Who are they trying to kid? There was no Internet back in 1958 except government and military computers linked together in a network over the phone lines.

Now I remember seeing CRACKED Magazine along side with MAD Magazine back in the 1960s when I was a kid, and then later in the 1970s they came out with National Lampoon.

I occurred to me that the web site is just another parody, a satire, like The Onion.

We've been duped!

Yes, not even the refs are safe in hockey, and during a game Neudorf was checked hard across the face, and slammed into a wall. It was bad enough he had to be carried off and taken to a hospital. There Doctors did an MRI scan of his head to check for bleeding. The scan showed a tumor growing in the middle of his brain.

Had Neudorf not been refereeing for a less violent sport and not brutally smashed in the head, his tumor may have grown unchecked for much longer and made treatment much more difficult.
So who's up for some charity work then? Apparently sports fans like to be cracked in the head with a hockey stick - just in case they have brain cancer, of course! It's for their own good!

Yeah! Sports is good for us!

Like, when I was suspended from school because I failed to climb a rope in the gymnasium, even though I was passing all my other academic subjects, and never mind that I had a crippled up left knee, the result of a car accident at the age of 4, I got suspended for failing to climb a rope.

I guess that was for my own good.

And the beatings and bullying I had to put up with in school. Yeah! That was for my own good.

Well, you just gave me an idea.

The next time I encounter a rude obnoxious sports fan who only wants to talk to me about sports, and won't shut up when I don't want to listen, I'll just beat him over his head with my cane and fracture his skull until blood is pouring down his face and say to him "I'm doing this to save your life, because you might have brain cancer! Dumb ass!" Yeah! That's the ticket!

Thanks for giving me an idea.

No, they say that as a joke. Cracked was founded as a satire magazine, like MAD, in 1958. However, unlike MAD, it has succeeded in the digital medium, whereas MAD floundered and is now in financial trouble. "America's Only Humor and Video Site Since 1958" is poking fun at the fact that they've been around since 1958, however the website itself wasn't founded until 2005-ish.

Also, while their material is humorous, they do research and all their information is absolutely true. Don't believe me, click any of the links found in the article.

I see.

So, it's good to get whacked over the head with a hockey stick, so that you end up in the hospital where they might discover something more serious and save your life.

Now, all the jocks and sports fans might get the idea that it's OK to beat up on people and put them in the hospital for their own good.

Yeah right!

Most intelligent people go for an annual physical check up and that's how they find out they might have something serious going on. We don't need to get hit over the head with hockey sticks to go to a hospital.

Next thing you know, when jock commit rape on women, the jocks will say they're doing it for their own good.

No, sports are not good for us, and sports are certainly not good for our schools.

So, stick that in your Gucci bag, and shove your Gucci bag up your ass, and hit the road!

Hey! This is amazing!

NonsensicalSportsman actually posted something that was more than just a one-line comment.

I didn't think he had it in him!

And by the way, when I was a kid, I didn't waste my time reading MAD or CRACKED magazines.

I preferred Scientific American or Science Digest or Discover magazine.

So, you're still a dumb-ass!

Oh! And one more thing Mr. NonsensicalSportsman . . . We are all sick and tired of jocks and sports fans beating up on people and putting them in hospitals.

We're going to fight back and perhaps even start putting a few jocks in the morgue.

Fat Man, you've crossed the line again. Once again, you're talking about killing people. Have any sports fans or "jocks" talked about killing "nerds" at any sports forum? At other websites I have come across two posts, one from a former high-school football player and another from a bodybuilder, who have expressed a lack of remorse for having been bullies when they were in school. But I've not come across any that talk about killing "nerds." I should also point out that while SensibleSportsman has not called you any names, you have engaged in name-calling, which is a violation of the forum rules.

I have this to say for all new visitors to this website's forum: There is a diversity of views among those of us who support this website. Each one of us has his own point of view.

SensibleSportsman reminds me a little bit of Nick, who also posted a Crack link. Just a coincidence?
