Hillsborough disaster

Post by wibberley »

Concerning my callous remarks concerning the Hillsborough Disaster of April 1989 I apologise if I have caused offence. However,it needs to be taken into consideration that here in England at least, football fans in particular,do act with impunity.Recently, fans at a local stadium smashed it up despite the fact they had WON the game.Another incident where a proffessinal footballer on british television boasted about the fact the he was party to smashing up the "Blue Peter" garden when he was a teenager and proud of it. I do not think these things in themselves condemn the sport but I would want to give serious consideration to being a fan if that kind of thing went on ,which of course it does, and in my opinion,is endemic. Of course I think sport sucks, that is why I am on this forum, but for those that want to pursue it,let them. What I object to is being labelled "weird"because I dont do sports.Having said that, now I am much older and have defined myself much more I dont find not liking sports much of a problem anymore.I just go to work now and for the most part dont speak to anybody as they mostly all talk about premier league football pretty much ALL of the time which is seriously boring by any stretch of the imagination. However, there are one or two who dont like sport so I can talk to them sometime. So,instead of trying to fit in ,I do my own thing ,and am happy to do it.

I figured you were just expressing a general feeling as we all do here from time to time. I know what you mean about the coworkers. I have worked at places where sports talk was so regular that they might as well have been speaking Chinese. Luckily where I work now, it's not that bad although it only takes one or two jackasses to commandeer the TV, turn it to football, turn it up full blast and drown out any hope of getting any work done. And once the infection takes hold, more morons pour in. : (

Can't you complain to your supervisor or something about it?

Or is the supervisor the one doing it?

No offense taken, wibberley.

Although I'm a resident of the US, I am aware of the problem the British have with hooliganism. I once saw a You Tube video of these fanatical fans disrupting traffic in a city as they pounded on each other. Amazing. It's nothing less than socially tolerated lawlessness. Of course, the same phenomenon exists in our country. (How often, I wouldn't know.) Sports fans who riot in the streets and destroy property (private or otherwise) should be treated like the other criminals and be thrown in jail, and such riots should be broken up with tear gas. Rioters should not be treated with kid gloves, regardless of who they are. I'm amazed that anyone would take pleasure in committing acts of vandalism, such as that British footballer you mentioned. The problem is that some individuals don't believe that the same rules apply to them that apply to the rest of us.

Again, welcome to the forum. And thanks for coming back.

no it's not the supervisor --it's just that I work in an office with an "anything goes" atmosphere and virtually no management. But I'm not complaining. I get to watch a lot of movies too. :)

Yeah! When I was in high school, in our science class, we didn't learn science, we watched a bunch of stupid movies, mostly cartoons while our science teacher, who was also the school's football coach was out coaching his team of pre-frontally lobotomized baboons.

Sports is destroying our schools and it's going to destroy our country!

It's already destroying my city!

Glad to see you back, wibberley.
Hate to sound like I'm raining on your parade by criticising one of your comments - after all, as a sports hating board, this is where all the "callous remarks" on sports fans belong. But I prefer to badmouth the abusive jocks and assholetes who have caused me and many of the other members a lot of harm in our younger days; I try not to vent my anger out on all sports fans. After all, in every group of people there are good people, indifferent people and those who soil the whole group and make people think less of them. I have learned through recent internet encounters that not all the sports fans I've seen are idiotic, abusive and very rigid in their beliefs, yet as you may expect, a few of them can be VERY vindictive and intolerant indeed. Check out the posts on this forum from a guy called "Samdaman". Just blind hate. No wonder some of the members have absolutely no respect for any athletes given the image this guy gave us about them. The posts were done a long time ago now - far before I ever found this website - but the hatred and ignorance shown in them will linger on in the past of the site forever.
Have fun here. I look forward to talking to you again.

Best regards,
