Re: Not of This Earth (1957) available at youtube
Much to my delight last night, I discovered that the science fiction classic movie Not of This Earth had just recently been posted in a series of six youtube videos, beginning on November 28. As you have already seen, I have posted each of these videos above. This movie is a sentimental favorite of my childhood. The last time I had seen it was on TV way back in 1963, when I was in the 6th grade. Not a very good year for me (to put it mildly), but I loved this movie! Itâ??s been a very long time since I last saw it. Forty-six years! Watching it again last night (thanks to youtube), I found it to be just as good as I remembered. Itâ??s an excellent science fiction movie for its time. Those of you who are of the younger generation should remember that the technology did not then exist for the special effects that you take for granted today. But if you like movies with sinister aliens from outer space whose intentions towards homo sapiens are not to our betterment, as well as a few memorably gruesome (but not gory) images, this movie is for you. This movie stars Paul Birch and Beverly Garland. (rotten, you know that the late Beverly Garland, a wonderful lady who had a great sense of humor, was a favorite of MST3K fans; but this movie is definitely not MST3K material. It's too competent.) The director of this movie, Roger Corman, did direct a number of stinkers (many of which I admit to having seen
); but this particular movie and his film versions of tales by Edgar Allan Poe are actually good. I should also point out that this is the original movie and is not the abominable 1988 remake starring the ex-porn star Traci Lords. Just as Fat Man brought you an excellent Outer Limits episode, it has been my pleasure to bring this entertaining movie to you. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

Re: Not of This Earth (1957) available at youtube
WOW! This movie was really cool!!!
I love some of these old black & white movies from the 1950s!
The picture quality was excellent, really sharp and crystal clear.
I hope they never "colorize" this movie as they had done with so many of the old black & white classics. Adding color to these movies actually ruins the quality, the original "feeling" of the movie. Adding color to these old black & white classics is like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa.
Now there is another excellent movie from the 1950s titled Forbidden Planet.
I'm going to see if I can find it on You Tube.
Of course, Forbidden Planet is in color. It always has been because it was never in black & white. They did make some color movies back in the 1950s, and there is even a few color movies that were made back in the 1940s and the 1930s, but very few since it was too expensive, so most were in black & white.
The movie, Not Of This Earth is best seen in black & white. It gives the movie more of a creepy feeling!
I love it!
Thanks Earl!

Re: Not of This Earth (1957) available at youtube
You're welcome, Fat Man. I'm glad that you enjoyed watching it. I hope others will enjoy the movie as well. Yes, there is a minor flaw or two of one kind or another, if you want to nitpick; but who cares? I'm willing to let the storyline carry the show, if it's good enough.
I certainly agree with you that some shows are best seen in black and white. They're simply just creepier in black and white. Of course, the first example that leaps to my mind is Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Psycho (which is one of my favorite movies, needless to say). Colorizing Psycho (as well as this movie) would definitely diminish its creepiness.
Back to this movie, I love how ordinary mundane objects (a pair of black sunglasses and a metal suitcase) are given horrific significance by their association with what they conceal. The variation of the vampirism theme is interesting. I just saw a trailer for the movie at the youtube website, and I have to agree that the alien is worse than Dracula. One of the things I like about this movie is that even though he is rather threatening in a quiet sort of way, Paul Birch's alien is still at a disadvantage in a society that is totally foreign to his own. Oddly enough, I almost feel a sort of sympathy for the aliens, since their race is doomed. And the tragic death of the female alien actually makes me sad. Of course, over the years I've seen many death scenes in science fiction and monster movies; but I've always remembered the scene of the doctor's death in this movie, simple (but effective) as it is.
