A quandry
A quandry
I'm in an odd situation.
The man who drove me over the brink to totally hating sports and drove me to this website has sent a friend request to me on facebook
For those of you who don't remember my back story of how i found this forum or wish to brush up on the story
http://www.sportssuck.org/phpbb2/viewto ... ?f=1&t=998
This man mentally injured me over sports. I became almost physically ill over the situation. Now this leaves me in quite a predicament. If i sign him up, he will be added to my friend list, though i don't think he will start writing me or anything, so it will mostly be a symbolic thing, but I don't want to be friends with this man. If i don't sign him up, he might notice and call me to find out why. I'm not ready to talk to this man. Maybe someday, but not now. This is still too soon.
Now, what would you do?

The guy was a bit over the top, but you're overreacting just a bit.
In the post where you told the story you said the guy said he always felt like he had to defend sports. What type of things did you ever say about sports? Not badgering you, just wondering.

Re: A quandry
Hi, rotten. This is just my opinion, but I would go ahead and add him to your friend list. I don't think it would cause any trouble. If he wants to restore the friendship that he once had with you, this would be a first step. Believe me, I know how you feel. As I said when you first posted in this forum, I went through a very similar situation about fifteen years ago, although it had absolutely nothing to do with my views about sports. I try to keep an attitude of always being willing to forgive, but I certainly don't believe that unconditional forgiveness is incumbent upon anyone either. I think you possibly would be doing yourself a disservice if you completely cut him off at this point in time because he might be trying to restore your friendship, but I could be wrong. I just don't know. Anticipating how he might react to you in the future, he might not even bring up the argument the two of you had. If he doesn't but is still respectful of you and doesn't argue with you about sports anymore, then your friendship would be restored. I'm sure not telling you how to run your life, but I would go ahead and add him to your friend list and see what happens. It's always easier to delete from a facebook webpage someone who has turned out to be insincere than it is to regain a lost opportunity. I'm not completely sure what to say because I don't know the man. I also think you should respect your own feelings and not force yourself into an uncomfortable position. I hope my long-winded response will help you in some way.

Trying to avoid the guy to avoid hurting his feelings when he is inconsiderate of mine is overreacting? Hmm, i don't get it.Polite24 wrote:The guy was a bit over the top, but you're overreacting just a bit.
The only ting i can think of the i ever said, was when he had a game on was when the crowd started cheering after their team made a good play, and i said "yay, we've attached our egos to you!" which he laughed and said, "yeah, you're kind of right"Polite24 wrote: In the post where you told the story you said the guy said he always felt like he had to defend sports. Other then that not much, i've set and listened to him and his kids talk about how important it was to win, and how second place was first place looser. Nice attitude to pass onto your kids. Most of the time, i said nothing at all, he mostly felt offended by the fact that i didn't jump in there to talk about how great sports are. Meanwhile, i get constantly attacked by how bad video games are. So, maybe i had it coming to me.

Re: A quandry
Thank you Earl, insightful as always. Most likely i will add him as a friend. At this point though, i do not believe he even has an idea that he hurt my feelings. So i don't think this is him trying to make up. I think more then anything, he has just blown off the situation. Well, it's more then that to me. Do i want to be friends with the guy, well sure, at least part of me. He has been a very important part of my life. But on the other hand, i don't like being around short sighted people that have the one and only answer. He's always been right and isn't afraid to tell you that. That's why i don't think he sees my side of this whole thing.

the attitude of "first place is the only winner" has it's pros and cons. On one hand it can teach you to never settle for anything, and always try hard. On the other hand 2nd place sometimes is really good.

Yeah, you are right once again.
It breeds poor losers.
It breeds people who beat their wife when there team looses.
It breeds people who use steroids so they can hit a little white ball over a bunch of idiots heads.
It breeds people who cheat, and break rules so they can be the winner.
It breeds people who think only about themselves.
Yup, all healthy things.
People should be taught to try their hardest, not that winning is the only option.

I have always believed, that if you going to play in sports, that it's better to play a clean and honest game and lose with honor then to play a dirty game and cheat to win.rotten wrote:Polite24 wrote:the attitude of "first place is the only winner" has it's pros and cons. But no! In sports, all they care about is winning at any cost.

Wow, what culture, must be great.â??Iâ??m going to go home and beat up my wife,â? Penn State football coach Joe Paterno once said at a press conference after his team lost to the University of Texas. Later he defended the statement as â??just part of the sports culture, locker room talk, harmless, a joke that did not mean anything.â?
Wow, what great sense of humor these people have.Spectators also get into the swing of things. Boston Celtics fans have hung banners in the arena claiming they like to beat rival teams almost as much as â??we like to beat our wives.â?
I'm don't need to go here do i? Don't pretend you think they don't. We know you are smarter then that.rotten wrote: It breeds people who use steroids so they can hit a little white ball over a bunch of idiots heads.

I think most people here have seen this, and that is why they are here.rotten wrote: It breeds people who think only about themselves.
I really hate to sugar coat this for you, but here you go.
Baseball star Darryl Strawberry has admitted beating his wife and pointing a gun in her face.
Basketball star Moses Malone was accused by his wife of physical and verbal brutality including death threats. He insisted he never hit her or threatened to kill her but admitted having â??moved her out of the way.â?
Golfer John Daly was arrested at his home after allegedly hurling his wife against a wall, pulling her hair, and trashing the house. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor harassment charge and was placed on two yearsâ?? probation with the stipulation that he complete domestic violence treatment program.
Juanita Leonard testified in divorce court in 1991 that boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, her former husband, often punched her with his fists, threw her around, and harassed her â??physically and mentally in front of the children.â? He threatened to kill himself with a gun, she said. He threw lamps and broke mirrors. Ray Leonard denied none of this. At a press conference, he admitted having struck his wife with his fists. Yet he justified the behavior by saying that he and Juanita â??fought, argued,â? and â??grabbed each other,â? but that â??that was in our house, between us.â?
Alabama menâ??s basketball coach Wimp Sanderson resigned in 1992 after Nancy Watts filed a sex discrimination complaint against him. Watts, his longtime secretary and mistress, alleged that Sanderson hit her as part of an ongoing pattern of physical and sexual abuse, and was awarded $275,000 in a settlement. Sanderson claimed in court documents that Watts received her black eye by colliding with his outstretched hand.

Re: A quandry
Isolated incidents buddy. I could just as easily bring up a bunch of athletes acting good and sportsmanlike, but that would fall on deaf ears.
And I'd love to know where you got those quotes from.

Yeah there have definitely been some athletes who are poor losers and bad people, but these are a very small minority. And a big part of sports' appeal comes from rooting against the bad guys.

All those riots are a small minority? Athletes doing all the rape is minor? All those fucking people who flunk school but get scholars because they played sports deserve the scholars? BULLSHIT!
