Hello to all that have good sense to not to be totally in love with sports.
Anyway, I saw a commercial the other day on television and a thought came to mind. It was a McDonald's commercial about people painting their faces. Why is it acceptable for people to dress out of the ordinary for a sporting event but not for anything else? Seriously, if you walk down the street in a sports jersey or your face painted people don't bat an eye. Now walk down the street in a star trek or star wars outfit and imagine the comments you would hear. How did dressing up for football (american), hockey, basketball, or baseball become an accepted practice? For that matter think of guys who do drag and the problems they encounter when they walk down a typical city street. These sports loving freaks would be the first to mock others for dressing out of the ordinary but still paint their faces with the colors of their favorite team. Is the face painter really any different than a drag queen? They both try to "enhance" their appearance by applying colors to their face that weren't already there before. I am not promoting drag but it is an interesting comparison. I think it is time we try to start making people feel shame for dressing like a nut just to watch people throw a ball around. Anyway, it is just a thought and wondered if anyone else had given this one any thought.
You want to try living in England nowadays. In certain areas football ( soccer to Yanks) is such a brainwashing exercise that men in their seventies, who are way too old to do much exercise, wear team colours. I used to do judo, and obviously wandering around in a gi and bare feet would invite ridicule, but surely dressing up in a tacky looking shirt with another guy's name on looks equally stupid. Same as you get these grossly overweight people who wear tracksuits over here. In fact a fair part of British society now deems a horrible shiny tracksuit made in an Asian sweatshop a must have item because it has ADIDAS in big letters. On women it makes them look as feminine and desirable as a pit bull. I would rather baulk than wear this crap.
In England we have a name for the tracksuit wearing brigade: chavs. I think they're called guidos or something in America.

Yep. It just goes to show ya how acceptable ANYTHING that has to with sports is. What about driving around with team flags attached to your car?! That's bizarre behavior in my book!

I think it's just heavy commercialism with constant advertisements that these people swallow hook, line, and sinker. I saw a commercial last night showing different people, in different situations, wearing different team jerseys. At the end of the commercial, the bold slogan --All You Need is Passion and XXXXXX company's sports clothes --which suggests people who aren't into sports aren't passionate. What a load of manure! But people go for it! They actually think THEY look good in those clothes. Most of 'em are FAT slobs who can barely squeeze into them.
i NEVER leave my house without a jersey on. yankees jets and rangers. it is very ood 2 not wear sports clothes. every 1 wears a yankee jersey at least once in a while
Hey, Guest, I've always aspired to have a Manchester United shirt with another guy's name on and more advertising than a cable television station. Moat people who wear sports wear in England are usually fat slobs who think it makes them look athletic, or people on welfare. We call these people chavs or tracksuit trash over here. Like I've said before I could get my old gi out but somehow I think not.

We agree on one thing then. Soccer, usually called football in England, is a drag. There's a big match on the BBC now, but I don't feel the inclination to sit through 90 minutes of tedium.
Quite like winter sports, though, esp watching some hot bit of Oriental stuff in a short skirt and sheer tights skating around to Swan Lake. Surely that's a more manly and heterosexual thing than watching men in shorts running about. There's a women's rugby league team formed just up the road and I'm pretty tempted to go and watch them play. Nice to see some powerful shapely women running about.
So this is it then, I like sports involving women, but don't watch my own gender in scanty outfits. Mind you, I still love to watch Mortal Kombat, WWF and UFC.
I agree --I watched some of the Olympic coverage of ice skating. Those girls were pretty hot. That's the kind of sports wear I like.
Not the typical oversized, baggy jersey that these sports fans pay over $50 for. I can't figure out why anyone would pay that much for such a lousy shirt. I'm guessing they imagine that when they put it on they look just like THEM. ha ha ha ha ah ha

Well, that's a funny thing about the Olympics....I've never thought of figure skating as a sport so much than that it's more of an Art. (Like Dance, etc)
Don't get me wrong, it's definitely physically rigorous, but it's got class. Sports don't.
