Sports have no meaning?
I will start not by attacking you guys but by listing these things, please take the time to read this.
2001 World Series
Yankees-Diamondbacks
This World Series was played just over a month after the attacks, and for many it was an escape to what had happened. For three hours they gave so a lot of people happiness and a way to forget about what had happened on 9-11. Watch the HBO Documentary on this, and tell me sports don't matter.
1968 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers
Riots and racism were running rampant in Detroit at that time, and like the 01 Yankees, this team made people forget about that and made white and black people come together about something. Like the 2001 World Series, There is an HBO documentary on this and again I challenge you to watch that and then tell me sports have no meaning.
2006 New Orleans Saints
Did the Saints heal New Orleans? No, but again, what they did is give people hope and something to feel normal about every Sunday and throughout the week. Everyone(all sports fans at least) remembers how emotional their first home game back at the Superdome was.
Those are just a few examples
Bottom line is, sports have brought people together in so many ways. You make friends, long lasting memories, and all those sorts of things. If you don't like sports, fine, don't watch em. But to bash them to this degree where you have a message board about it? It's crazy. I could ALMOST see you spewing this hate to pro sports, because they make so much money. You have to understand the commitment these guys make. So much time away from their family, always have to be in perfect shape, always have to work extremely hard. Maybe even college as well, because there are definitely some guys who get the opportunity to go to a good college who otherwise wouldn't have, and you don't think thats right. Fine, but it's not even about that with you people. You hate on high school sports, and for what reason? I don't know. In every high school across America, they have eligibility requirements. So if you're grades aren't at least passing, you can't play. This is motivation for a lot of kids to keep their grades up and at the same time teaches them life lessons and values education. You often find that athletes are the best students as well.
I will agree that you do have your select few coaches/high schools who let certain players play even though they have failing grades. I agree this is wrong and it sends a bad message to those athletes. However, you can't call out high school sports as a whole because of these isolated incidents.
In my opinion, a lot of your guys hate stems from the bitterness of not being socially accepted in high school among that sports oriented clique. Not all of you, but I would venture to say a lot of your guys dislike for sports stops and ends with that reasoning, you just won't admit it.
What purpose does sports serve? It's a means of entertainment, not to mention the things I've already talked about like bringing people together, and those teams that changed peoples lives. It can instill a never quit attitude, as well as a competitive drive that you can use in many avenues of life besides sports. Sports can help you become more social, as well as break down boundaries. Has anyone ever seen Gridiron Gang? Im guessing no, because it's a sports movie. But watch that and tell me sports don't affect people. That movie is based on a true story BTW. Other good examples are Coach Carter, and Remember the Titans.
I love music and movies, but what purpose do they serve? You guys complain about the amount of coverage sports gets, but music and movies get just as much. They are all entertainment, and you guys are just so far off base with this whole idea of a message board that it's insane.
Sports are fun, rooting for something that's bigger than you is fun, playing and being competitive is something that's fun. And for whatever reason you guys are so bitter you'd be happier if you took this fun away from people. Sad.
Sports have done far, FAR more good for the world than bad, and it's not even close. Don't even mention thug athletes, because without sports, these trouble making athletes would probably be much, much worse off.
Like I said earlier, it's fine to not like sports. But to not have any respect for what they can bring is just crazy.

Re: Sports have no meaning?
And? What's your point? You, like so many weak-minded people, love sports unconditionally. It provides something you lack, it fulfills a requirement that you are unable to fill on your own. Like an alcoholic who can't cope with life and needs to drink or a co-dependent personality, you need the approval of others.
I don't.
Your attempts to assign meaning to an activity as shallow as watching guys play ball are entertaining. People like you have tried to claim that sports were responsible for everything from world peace to a cure for the clap. That's just silly.
And the ironic thing is that this passionate defense of sports comes not from people who play sports (which I might accept) but from needy losers like you who can't and merely watch others. Good luck with that.

Yeah, there's a nice little pattern there, isn't there? Seems like whenever some tragedy happens, sports are the answer. Sports will bring us together! Nothing like feeling better about everything than watching a football game, huh? Of course, I guess if you don't like sports, you're pretty much screwed. Oh, but that type doesn't really matter much, right?
I'm sure there are plenty of other, more productive ways to bring everyone together and all that. Too bad nobody bothers to use their imaginations a little.

Well said! Those glitzy TV commercials make it seem as if sports=family values, as if football is the glue that binds us all together.abitagirl wrote:Yeah, there's a nice little pattern there, isn't there? But most of us are smart enough to know that TV and real life are two totally different things.

umm, over the years I have seen many other ways people were brought together besides sports, so don't act like there's nothing for you.
How are you going to reject something in this situation that made people feel normal again who lost friends and family members? You're taking your hatred of sports way too far.
Productivity is measured by the result, so I think you'd be hard pressed to find a lot more things that were more productive than sports in bringing people together.

And you're taking your love of other men, er...sports, for too seriously. Why the fuck do you care if we don't like sports? What the fuck is it to you?

Re: Sports have no meaning?
I stumbled upon this board and what I seen here was unfathomable to me. Again, it wasn't your dislike of sports, but rather your ideas and attitudes about certain things.
and Fitz, my friend, you seem to be the most immature one here. I made you look dumb in another thread, and alls you could respond with were gay jokes, and personal attacks. Just like you are now with another gay joke.
You have nothing else to come with, so alls you can respond with is things that aren't true.

You're the immature one, pal. You just can't believe that some people don't like sports and have the balls to say it. Your world view, your self-importance depends on everyone liking sports and now you don't know what to do. Well, here's a news flash: most people don't care about sports (or jock supporters) and more and more are even actively against the commercial atmosphere that requires everyone to embrace sports.Detroitsportsfan08 wrote:I stumbled upon this board and what I seen here was unfathomable to me. Re: Sports have no meaning?
Sports are harmful to society as a whole. They don't unite people at all. They are just another thing that people can bicker about. An "us vs. them" mentality is at the core of every sport. Hell, without that, you can't have sports.
High school sports are the worst offender and SHOULD be ridiculed the most. School is for EDU-FUCKING-CATION. I don't want my tax money going to pay for sports AT ALL. Kids are there to learn and sports have no place in school. Sports are one of the main reasons the U.S. has one of the worst education systems in the modern world.
And college sports? Same argument. If you can't get into college by merit of your intellect and grades alone, then tough shit. I don't want anybody that got into college on a sports scholarship doing any kind of job that requires a college education.
And pro sports? The athletes should be paid $50,000 a year, max.

It's clear you were an Absolute fucking nerd in high school. Sports are a huge, HUGE part of what makes high school fun. The excitement of friday night football games, the homecoming game, and the friday night basketball games.
Oh wait, you were at home.
I agree education is number one, but wtf?
And you have to be pulling at least decent grades to get into college on sports scholarship.
50,000 a year? LOL, good one.
Man that was an ignorant post

There it is. The typical jock mentality rears it's ugly head.
That's the thing, isn't it? You sports loving assholes just need to try and convince everyone around you that sports are the ONLY thing that matters and if someone, anyone, doesn't agree then they're a nerd or gay or some other kind of weirdo.
Well I say you can take the sports you love so much and choke on them, you narrow-minded, condescending, intolerant, ignorant waste of flesh, closet homosexual.
So basically anyone who didn't like sports automatically was a nerd? Maybe he didn't enjoy wasting his time listening to a bunch of empty-headed, overgrown neanderthals try to make complete sentences? Then again maybe you just enjoyed getting naked with "the guys" in the gym lockerroom a little too much.
Well genius, have you ever heard the term "phallax symbol"? That's what the balls in sports represent. Ask any freshman pysch student to explain it for you.

Re: Sports have no meaning?
Yep, these die-hard sports fans try to say it in lots of different ways but it always boils down to the fact that we're completely screwed up because we won't like what he does --sports. I thought that blowhard said he'd made his last post. I guess he's just frustrated and can't live with the fact that everyone isn't JUST LIKE HIM. And had to come back and say something else. If he's this annoying in a forum, can you imagine what an obnoxious jack-ass he is in real life?Fitz301 wrote:

I couldn't imagine, Ray. He's probably worse than I am! And to think that someone would try THAT hard to try to change adamant views.
Anyways... Since you [Ray, Skul, etc. I can't remember everyone's name] are the administrators of this forum, can't you personally REMOVE detroitsportsfan?

Actually, I was at the games and it was still a complete waste of my time and if I had it to do over again I wouldn't have gone. Ever. And you don't have to have decent grades to get a sports scholarship. That is just naive. Hell, you can get away with rape, even murder, if you can throw a fucking football.drowbot0181 wrote:Sports are harmful to society as a whole. They don't unite people at all. And why not $50,000/year? Next time come back with an actual counterpoint instead of just saying "Duh...that's stooopid."
Re: Sports have no meaning?
Ha! This guy started off kind of civil, but then just degenerated into the typical "what, are you a nerd?" mentality. I should have known that would happen. I also had a feeling he was going to come back at some point. It's funny how they can't seem to stay away. I bet he won't rest until everybody is a drooling sports fan like he is.
Why do I get the feeling he was doling out wedgies in high school?
