Most people riot after they've won a big game, but things seem to be different for Canadians.

Angry, drunken fans ran wild Wednesday night after the Vancouver Canucks' 4-0 loss to Boston in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, setting cars and garbage cans ablaze, smashing windows, showering giant TV screens with beer bottles and dancing atop overturned vehicles.

Police said they had reports of four stabbings, though spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness said she couldn't confirm them.

While Robertson said there had been no fatalities, ambulances appeared to be having trouble getting inside the zone to help the injured. TV images showed at least one woman mopping blood from her forehead.

At a Bay store, looters were seen grabbing T-shirts and anything else they could get their hands on. Young women were seen escaping with MAC cosmetics, with one carrying out part of a mannequin. The landmark building was filling with smoke as people, their faces covered in bandannas, continued the violence.

About an hour after the game, some bold troublemakers started hurling garbage and bottles at police officers, who deflected the debris with riot shields. Protesters who rushed the police line were quickly subdued with blows from a truncheon.

Oh yeah, I heard about the riot. Ostensibly, this was because of the Vancouver Canucks, their hockey team, losing in the final game of the final round of this year's series. However, this was not the real reason. As was made pretty obvious later, the riot was planned and started by criminals and other people out-of-town who came (with supplies, in order to flip cars and light them on fire) to urge the drunken masses into starting a "riot" so that they could, for example, break into all the downtown stores, steal stuff, and cause general destruction and such. And it snowballed from there. It would've happened whether the Canucks won or lost, because the game wasn't important. All that mattered was that there was a large crowd of people watching the game downtown, and they were used as cover by the core of the rioters.

The morning after, thousands of people went downtown and, ignoring whatever they were supposed to be doing (like go to work) starting helping the city staff do the enormous clean-up job required to fix everything. Move the broken car parts off the streets, sweep up the glass, repair all that was broken, help the storeowners who were broken into get their store back together, put plywood over the broken storefront windows, etc. The enormous job took only hours, with so many thousands of people helping.

And then someone wrote a little message of hope on one of the plywood walls covering a store window.

And then more did.

It literally goes on for blocks. There's at least tens of thousands of messages on the walls, almost certainly more. And more are being written at every moment. That's not all, either: people are leaving flowers there, putting up banners of childrens' artwork and messages, drawing hearts everywhere... it's absolutely unbelievable, I'd love to see it to see how massive and heartfelt this is. The people of Vancouver have, as a whole, all written something there to show their support for peace and love and their opposition against the hate and violence and supreme idiocy that those minority few exhibited.
