THE Anime Thread

Post by The Imperialist »

Well, jsut as it says on the tin, I have set up a general Anime Thread, where one just talks on and on about anime.

Rules for this particular thread:
a) Do not go on about how rubbish anime is. This is an anime discussion thread, not a 'let us take the micky out of anime' thread.

b) Maturity please

c) Serious critique of anime, and give proper reasons and logic. We are not muscle heads who cannot construct a proper arguement.

d) Warn of spoilers where there are one.

I sincerely feel sad that no one has responded to your thread at this point in time. :( But I can say that both of my daughters (who are now young adults, not kids) are still big fans of Hayao Miyazaki. Among their movie DVDs are My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. Both of them love these shows.

I was looking for this thread, but for some reason, I couldn't find it.

...I was in the wrong board.

Anyway, for this thread, I assume you're talking about true anime, and not any old cartoon (I've seen quite a few western cartoons being called anime).

Well, I just got the first few seasons of Dragonball Z. I used to watch it back when we had Cartoon Network, but I didn't get to see the whole thing. I managed to see until the end of the Frieza Saga, but to get the rest, you had to pay. Needless to say, that never happened. Now I can catch up on what I missed. :P

Really, what rekindled it was Team Four Star's parody, Dragonball Z Abridged. Even if you've never seen Dragonball Z before, you might still find this funny.

Another I like is Sonic X. I know a lot of people don't like it, but, eh... well, whatever.

My dad also had a few animes on VHS, and I watched a couple of them when I was younger... but I can't remember a thing.

So that's me.

The thing I remember most about Dragonball (aside from its chronic repetitiveness which miraculously held together an interesting and coherent plot) is "Cacaroooooooooot!" and the know memetised "It's over 9000!", but remember it in Japanese....

Old anime, has its charms (original Gundam is godalmighty, and the beginning of modern anime), but I am more into anime from the 90's onwards. (Starting off with Neon Genesis Evangelion and its retakes which are still my favourite)

The newest anime that I am keeping my hopes are Highschool of the Dead. Watch it, it is very interesting (even though, welcomingly for me, has a lot of nationalist taste in it)

WHOOHOOO AN ANIMEZ THREAD!!! FINALLY!!!!!

A common misconception about Anime is that is ONLY for kids like which simply isn't true. "Seinen" and "Josei" anime/manga are genered to more mature males and females respectively.

Agreed, most shounen (fighting) anime aren't the most well-written and are very formulaic. I think the dragonball series became popular in the west because cartoons here weren't at the same time as brutal or crazy. I read alot of the Highschool of the Dead manga long before they started working on the anime so I wasn't really interested in watching it. The past few years have had some dry anime line-ups imo. I might give it a shot out of boredom. Last season "Working!!" was the only anime I really looked forward to watching every week. It's probably too "ordinary" for some people. I've been starving for a new mecha series for almost 2 years now.

Chris...the fact that he was the more of the main character than Sonic really pissed me off if only for wasting screen time on him and other annoying humans. Or how could I forget his platonic obsession with sonic. Otherwise it wasn't that bad.

Highschool of the Dead anime has its awesomeness. (The manga is good also- and the original script writer for the manga, I am a fan of- his novels are awesome)

Working!! is good anime. It is one of the rays of sunlight in the recently cloudy anime world.

It is quite annoying that these people will not do original anime, and instead insist on doing animetisation of visual novel, light novel, or manga. (E.g. 11eyes: Like many other anime based on visual novel, I was looking forward to it, as I played the original game. When I watched it, tears flowed into rivers. They made such a hack job out of it. The only point one can pat them on the back is the artwork. Everything else was... CRAP!)

Well, there is a recent mecha anime. Gundam Unicorn. I don't know if you will like it, but it is essentially story of earth pilot who must fight against the reincarnation of Neo-Neo Zeon. OVA by the way.

Haha nice that you enjoyed Working!! too. It was very quaint and different. Yeah there's definitely a lack of variety and creativity in anime these days. I don't really care if based of a visual novel or manga as long as its entertaining but these days most anime in general don't pique my interest enough for me to watch them. Happy you mentioned gundam.

c) Serious critique of anime, and give proper reasons and logic

I haven't done a serious critique(written one at least) of any anime yet. I'm gonna look back a re-watch series I enjoyed in the past. I'll review a completed anime series only or completed season. Haha, now to figure where to start.

Oh yeah, Gundam Wing. I started watching that... then stopped, for some reason... :?

Speaking of which, one of my dad's VHS animes had big robots in it, but it was mostly talking. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, though. I think "LAW" was in the title, but I'm not sure. Another was Odin. He also had 3-Eyes (I think it's called) and Vampire Hunter D; neither of which I watched. I think that was all of them... yeah, pretty sure.

Well, my uncle brought over Freeman at some point, but I've no idea about that one.

Hmmm... Gordon Freeman? :P No.

The critique rule is about when you actually make a negative comment about a certain anime (if you wish to argue about how bad an anime is, it must be done properly)

@Skul
If LAW was part of the catchphrase of the title, it is most probably Patlabor (Something about the future of law reinforcement). (It cannot be Law of Ueki, as it has no robots, and was released after the complete transfer to DVDs...)

UPDATE: Because there aren't any (as far as I know) anime with "LAW" (that is mecha) in its actual title that got released during the VHS era, there is another anime called Galvion which I think had some reference to law in its catchphrase.

Patlabor, that's it! I think they were mechs for the police, which is probably where "law" came from.

And that other one I mentioned, 3-Eyes? Close. It's actually 3x3 Eyes.

Oh yes, Sazan Eyes (that is how it is pronounced). I still got to read the manga and watch the anime (one can gain knowledge even though they haven't actually watched....)

Yes, Patlabor is essentially mechs for police, in a world where manned robots are daily transport, contruction machines and any other concievable thing that used to be ocupied by special machines.

Well that was probably a reason why I didn't like my middle-school art class so much. Haha. I always assumed there that were inter-changeable as words or very similar at least. This might explain why I don't see it being used often in other classes if ever. Wait forget everything I said, it's just been a LONG time since I've been in that art class.

But then, people who bother to post in this thread, likes anime, so I don't really think somebody is just going to post something about how rubbish anime is.
