Would I fit in here?`
Something I figure you should know about me before I begin: Although I hate the social "values" that corrupt professional sports create, I strongly believe that each person should strive for physical as well as mental perfection as far as he/she is able. I do attend karate classes, and have been interested in taking up archery. I must say, I tend to gravitate to those "sports" which emphasize personal discipline (REAL discipline like the kind martial arts tries to impart, not "discipline" like they claim those overgrown football oafs have) or are on a more culturally significant level (such as archery).
Most of all, I hate how sports invert the moral fabric of society. It's gotten to the point where an individual who can't even read or do basic math but can make a touchdown is more celebrated in society than someone with multiple PHds yet who just happened to miss the super bowl last Sunday.
On top of which, I find ALL sports incredibly boring to watch on TV. As a child, some of my most frustrating TV experiences were when the stupid bowl took over practically a third or more of all channels on the TV, with about a third more of the rest of the channels putting on reruns because they wanted to see "da game" as well.
I guess my question is, does someone like me who's in the middle ground have a place here?

Welcome Snesgamer.
Nah! You shouldn't have any problem fitting in here.
OK, it's not the sport itself I hate so much as it is the culture around sports.
There was a time, when I was a kid, before I started going to school, I didn't actually "hate" football or basketball or baseball. I was simply not interested.
But it was after years of bullying and being humiliated in the gym during PE classes, that I learned to hate sports with the purplest of passions.
Also, many of us here are in favor of PE reforms. I'm sure that Earl can tell you all about that, since it's one of his favorite topics.
When I was in collage, I took a one semester PE course in weight training. That was the very first time I took a PE course that I actually liked. I enjoyed pumping iron, and I got to where I could leg press 650 pounds which was the entire stack of irons after only the first 5 or 6 weeks into the PE courses.
Of course, my PE instructor was impressed by my progress, and even told me that I could have a fantastic body if only I would just come out from under the "baby fat" as he would put it.
Yeah, I was fat. Actually, my PE instructor favored those of us who where are of the Endomorphic body type, because we can gain muscle mass very easily. We also gain fat easily, but we can also muscle up easily with proper exercise.
There are some sports that I like, such as archery. I believe I could enjoy skeet shooting. I believe I might even enjoy scuba diving. I like swimming anyway. We fat people float!
Otherwise, sports is not my thing in life.
When I was in school, I preferred science and art. Astronomy was my favorite subject.
I imagine after reading a lot of my posts here, you will notice that I have a lot of anger issues when it comes to sports.
That's why I'm known as The Judge here on these forums.
Anyway . . . . .

Most definitely. I'm considered to be a moderate in this forum. One of the other members once referred to me as "the man in the middle." I've never been a sports fan; but physical exercise is now a big part of my life because as a diabetic I need to exercise to control my blood sugar levels. I've even committed myself to a bodybuilding program at a local health club to increase my self-esteem. I try to avoid subjecting others to negative stereotypes, but view people as individuals. I also want to avoid ranting, and prefer to communicate in a civil manner. I definitely think you could be an asset to this website. So, welcome, Snesgamer.Snesgamer wrote:I guess my question is, does someone like me who's in the middle ground have a place here?

I see registration is open again on this site. And I also have seen that the 4channers are aware of this.
Snesgamer, if you are genuinely a sports hater, and not a spammer sent from that site to gain our trust in the hope of perhaps getting some personal information off of us, then I welcome you to the site and hope you enjoy your stay.
But if you are from the 4chan /sp/ thread and are here for said purposes, then DON'T EXPECT TO BE AROUND HERE LONG!
We've already had a few spammers from that site sent in the hope of getting in good with us and hopefully getting a bit more information to put up on your websites, and they have both been banned.
Be warned! Perhaps now was not the best time to join!
But if you are for real, sorry about this.

That sucks. It seems that sports geeks can't even allow an opposing opinion(s) to exist, even in a small isolated corner of the Internet. How hard is it to understand that some people actually find chasing a dead pig's corpse across a field for 3-4 hours BORING?i_like_1981 wrote:I see registration is open again on this site. Re: Would I fit in here?`
Okay, Snesgamer. I know just how you feel. I was one of the big losers in primary and high school because I had no interest in sports. Central London is one of the worst places for a non-athletic, skinny and studious guy to grow up. Bottles and bricks were and still are thrown. Of course it never went that far in the school I was at but I'd say at the time I believed it could. I hated cricket. There was an incident in the mid-1990s when I was in compulsory PE and one wet day we had cricket, and when the teacher left I was whacked across the legs with a bat and knocked to the floor. Then I had dirt thrown at me. It really sucked. Compulsory rugby was just as bad. I remember in about September of 1994 when we had to practice tackling and I was chosen to be one of the guys holding up the mats for the others to practice their tackling on. If I'd done the tackling chances are someone would have slammed me in the head with a mat and damaged my skull. But holding the mat was just as bad. One moron thought it would be really wise to wait until the teacher was talking to one of the other teachers teaching another class playing on the same field and then whip round the people holding the mats to run into and tackle me from behind. That guy must have weighed twice as much as me; it was like being hit by a wrecking ball. I didn't even know what he was up to; I thought he'd just gone up to chat with one of the other guys on mat duty behind me. I was knocked flying off my feet, the mat flew out of my grip and then I went face first in the mud. Guess what? Everyone started laughing and saying stuff like "get up you poof" and I had to spend the rest of that shitty lesson covered in mud. Thankfully rugby never happened for me again after 14 but I really don't see why they would make a person who was clearly not of the right build or athletic ability do it. It's just not appropriate. Compulsory PE in schools is one of my main problems. I don't call for a ban on PE altogether but I don't think it's fair that non-athletic students should have to endure the cruelty and sadism of some of the rougher sports-loving bullies in the name of "education". Non-athletic students should be allowed to improve their own health in another way, such as going to a training room while the bigger sports players go and enjoy their rough sports like rugby, instead of having to usually be belittled and humiliated in an environment that is more likely to discourage them from physical activity than improve their interest and skills at it.Snesgamer wrote:That sucks. Well, we do expect the jocks to attend high school math classes, and high school reading classes, etc. etc. when clearly they are not of high enough intelligence or academic ability to do it.i_like_1981 wrote:. . . . . but I really don't see why they would make a person who was clearly not of the right build or athletic ability do it. Maybe that's not appropriate either. So, the jocks should be sent to back Kindergarten.
Therefore, I have a solution.
We actually can't sent the jocks back to kindergarten because they'll just bully the little kids around being the low-life cowards that they are, and they're obviously not intelligent enough to be in a regular high school.
So, I purpose the following solution.
Send the jocks to special schools where the classroom subjects are at the Kindergarten level and where the PE and gym classes are at the more athletic level.
Then they can play all the rough-and-tumble sports they like, and learn their ABC's and how to count to 10, then when they graduate, if they're the lucky 2 to 3% percent, they might be able to pursue a career in professional sports. Otherwise they can get jobs bagging groceries, shining shoes, or scrubbing toilets.
I think that might work.

Snesgamer and i_like_1981, you have my complete sympathy. You bring up the main reason why I have supported this website. Some educators in this country now recognize the senselessness of forcing nonathletic boys to participate in competitive team sports and advocate programs that actually promote physical fitness, instead of discouraging the nonathletic students from being physically active. Of course, the success of this movement is not assured.i_like_1981 wrote:Okay, Snesgamer. I know just how you feel. Re: Would I fit in here?`
I should most like to see compulsory sports-centred PE removed from the curriculum. Students who are deemed to be less physically competent should be sent to a training room where they may build up their athletic skills and strength in a clean, monitored environment. The thought of being thrown out onto a pitch with a group of meaty thugs who would be most pleased to well and truly have them, with the sporting context making it more acceptable to inflict physical pain on people, is enough to discourage any nonathletic, underweight and more academic young person from happily participating in any physical activity. It did that for me. Things would be a lot better if the PE departments in our schools could look at their groups a bit closer and see the students as individuals, not as one massive group, and think of what would be most beneficial for each student and their PE course. It would be great if this was to happen in the future. Had it happened about 15 years ago it would have made me more grateful to have a PE course instead of being scared of it. Things ought to change, because although our site generally seems to be disliked on the web and looked down upon as being nerdy and square, it exists for a good reason and there should be more sites like this to campaign against compulsory sports-centred PE. Because fun it may be for most students but the minority too have their opinions worth hearing. The minority always deserve a say in matters.

Sparkle, our suspicious response is due to the fact that just recently our forum was nearly overloaded with spam by members from another website who made their sneak attack early one morning. But please feel free to post as often as you like. We're always interested in what new members have to say. Don't hesitate to express yourself.
Snesgamer, I definitely feel like I'm in the middle, caught between two extremes. We don't all think alike here.

No problem. I'm always round here. We don't get many new members anyway - hardly any, in fact. The only new 2010 members to our site who have stuck around are you, me, and wibberley. (Well, I was posting on here under the Guest function in the Forum Games section in late 2009 but the Guest function would not extend to the other boards so I saw it as a good idea to join early this year. And it has been.) I'm not counting the 4channers, although I guess they should be included too.sparkle wrote:Earl, thank you. I really appreciate that u & 1981 have made me feel welcome.
