COMPUTER PROBLEMS (Now Hopefully Fixed)

Post by Fat Man »

First of all, I would like to wish everybody here a Happy New Year.

Well, I've been away from the forums for a few days, because I have been having problems with my computer.

My second hard drive finally gave up the ghost.

It had been crapping out. Sometimes it would kick in when I boot my computer, and sometimes not.

I only bought it about 6 months ago, so, it was fairly new. It was a 160 gigabyte hard drive.

So, I took in out, and put in an old 80 gigabyte hard drive that I had used a few years ago. It still had a lot of favorite videos and pictures on it.

After I had installed it, when I booted it up again, my computer had to run the Check Disk routine which took about 3 hours before my Windows XP loaded.

Then I shut down my computer again, disconnected my 2 DVD drives, and reconnected the 160 gigabyte hard drive, so I would have three hard drives going.

As I had said, sometimes it would kick in, and sometimes not.

So, I made about 5 or 6 attempts at re-booting, and it finally kicked in one more time.

Then I was able to transfer all of my more recent downloads from it to my old 80 gigabyte hard drive. That was most fortunate, because I salvaged a lot of good music videos and valuable program files and downloads.

Then finally I shut down my computer again, took out the 160 gigabyte hard drive, and re-connected my 2 DVD drives, and booted up again.

So, I pulled off a miracle. The 160 gigabyte hard drive kicked in one last time so I could salvage some valuable program files and transfer them to my old 80 gigabyte hard drive.

But it's almost used up, because it only has about 20 gigabytes of free memory space left.

Then I had to fix a lot of other software problems. Eventually, I'll get a new 160 gigabyte hard drive, or perhaps a new one with even more memory like 500 gigabytes, but I'll have to save up for it.

Now you all know why I have been away from the forums for a while

Oh! And I see we have a new forum member, SPORTS ROCKS!!!

HEY SPORTS ROCKS! YOU LOOK PRETTY IN PINK, AND THE JERSEY . . . IT'S YOU!

Yeah! I've been reading your obnoxious posts.

I'll get back to you later, JIMBO!

In the meantime, I'm going to go out and to some shopping and get some more snacks and a 12 pack of Amber Bach beer and some stuff to celebrate New Year's Eve.

Then this evening, I'm going to have some fun tearing you a new one!!!

See ya later, Jimbo Bubba Booey!

I'm gonna own ya!!!

Welcome back. As you can see, he's not like Polite24 or SportsGuy92, unfortunately.

Didn't you have computer problems not too long ago? Are you one of the guys who builds their own computers and tinkers with it until it croaks?

Yeah! I'm the one! Actually, when something screws up I tinker with it until it works, before it eventually croaks for keeps.

When something goes ka-blooy, like my 160 gigabyte hard drive, which I only bought a few months ago, I replace whatever needs to be replaced.

I was very lucky, after 5 or 6 boot-ups that I was able to get the 160 gigabyte hard drive to kick in again one last time so I could salvage my most valuable files. Then it have up the ghost for keeps.

Eventually I'm gong to get a new Windows XP CD ROM disc so I can re-install Windows again if I need to.

I bought one before for only $50 dollars on sale off the Internet, but it turned out to be a pirated copy, and I was unable to download all the latest up-dates.

So, I have to save up for a legitimate copy.

Yeah, I did have some problems not too long ago. When I bought a new hard drive last summer (the one that croaked on me) it did not show up in the My Computer window, so I had to do a Google search on how to get the icon for the new D: Drive to show up. I found out how to initialize the new hard drive before I could format it using NTFS files.

That turned out to be a software problem.

I have learned how to fix or replace parts myself because I can't afford to pay someone to do it for me.

It pays to be a geek!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yeah --I agree. Those skills come in handy. I fix all my problems myself too. It takes me 10 times longer than it would take someone who knew what they doing but at least I gain the experience. :)
Not that I always remember what I learned!

Are you the person that disrespected 80's music on one of the Forum Games threads? Oh dear me... that's not so good! What about 70's? Do you hate that too? I've just been listening to Queen's album "Sheer Heart Attack" on my old record player... 1974, that one was. Truly excellent rock. I hope you're not one of those people who goes round calling the old rock boring and dull as you download scores of shitty rap songs from garbage artists like Soulja Boy and Pitbull! I don't want to think I'm spending my internet time around people like that! By the way, what is your opinion on the band Paramore? I hate them. Don't know why... probably because they're one of the "in" things at the moments and I really am an old fogie at heart who hates all the new songs. In actuality, I'm probably one of the youngest adult members of the board.

Now then, computers. I have to admit, I never could fully grasp how some people could build their computers by hand instead of just buying them piece by piece from the shop... hard drive, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc. and so on until you have a full set of equipment. The time, patience and knowledge involved must be pretty immense... I'm a techno geek myself but I wouldn't say I had the skills necessary to build my own computer from scratch. Does it cost more than buying a hard drive whole or is it actually cheaper? It's far more complicated than just going down to the shop and buying your PC whole but people are often motivated by the thought of saving a bit of cash even if it involves hard work... hell, us British are always like that. A bit stingy with our money!

Best regards,

Actually, when I say I build my own computers, I mean getting the case, the motherboard, the RAM cards, the hard drives and DVD drives and assembling it myself.

And then, installing the operating system, such as Windows XP myself.

Also, when something quits, I buy the replacement part and put it in myself.

So, I don't actually build from scratch, but merely assemble the components myself.
