Wife of a Sports Fan

My husband and I have three boys. I am well aware of the fact that at least one of my children will play sports. I am fine with that and more than willing to watch MY SON play WHATEVER> (Right now it's T-Ball and soon to be Basketball.) I just don't get why we as a family can not do something because "THE GAMES ON". If we eat at my parent's house then we can't leave until halftime or the end of the game. If we sit in a rest. then my husband has to the face the tv that is ALWAYS there now and requests that the channel be turned to a current game. He waits to mow the yard until he knows FOR SURE which team will win the game. He has no particuliar favorite sport. I've seen him watch all the basics and he'll even watch bowling, golf, and NOW POOL! (How pool is a sport I don't know, I just thought it was a game not a SPORTS game!) He was born and raised in PA and loves the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, 76ers and Penn State. (We live in Nebraska and he's opinions on Penn State are not always welcome.) But he doesn't just watch THOSE games. He watches them all! He'll even finish watching a game and then the station switches to one already in progress and he'll watch that one too!

The worst part is that he calls me from his work and wants me to check the scores! I have to go to ESPN.com or change the tv to ESPN. Then I sit there and say what quarter, how much time is left, and the score. And that's just with football. It never ends because there is always a sports game of some sorts on! If he can't find one then there is always golf!

I decorated a room for him downstairs that is just for sports. I etched a mirror with his own sports bar sign, I painted a football field onto a coffee table, and even allowed a TIRE from a race car to hang on the wall! I admit that it is pretty easy to buy gifts for him. Just buy something concerning his favorite teams and he's happy! But do you think he uses this room? He comes home frmo work and takes the remote out of my hand and as he changes the channels says, do you mind if I change the channel? It's a good thing we have three TVs.

Also, am I the only one that has discovered that the last five minutes of a football game can take a half hour!

He calls you from work and makes you change the channel and watch for the SCORES?! HA h AH AH AH AH AHA HA HA A AH HA
He DOES have a bad case, doesn't he? I FEEL for you. :)
I think I would say.. it's 17 to 15 four to go (whatever that means) or something. And not even look. But whatchagonnado? <sigh>

Anyway, welcome, sister. You can vent here anytime. It's funny you mention your kids playing. I'm having to adjust to my sister's son playing VARSITY football --apparently playing VARSITY is a big deal. I didn't even know what it meant and she explained that it means you play FIRST STRING and it's even more of a big deal because he's only in the 10th grade where they normally play at a level BELOW VARSITY (B.V.)(I forget what they called it). So I'm being forced to change my way of thinking. I have to make room in my head for the thought that playing football is OK (shudddder). Nope. Won't fit. He's a jerk. Just kidding. He's a good kid doing what hopefully he wants to do and enjoys. Good for him.

Oh yeah. That last five minutes of football can drag on for E T E R N I T Y.

Welcome to our fine forum!

I think the last five minutes of footbore take half-an-hour is because it's so mind-numbingly boring! Anything boring seems to take longer than it actually is. Try sitting watching a kettle, waiting for it to boil. It seems to take forever, but if you do something and not think about how long the kettle is taking, it doesn't seem as long.

If he's not at home and isn't watching 'the big game', then just make up a score, like Ray said. After all, if he can't be bothered to quickly check a website at work, then how's he going to know if the score is true or not? :)

Sports Addict...but also Rude it sounds

Sounds to me like he's not just a sports addict, but he's just plain damn RUDE!.
Calling you up to check the scores, as if you don't have anything better to do? You should check the caller ID and not answer...if he later asks why, tell him you were on the jon. :P
And then coming home, not using the sports room you made for him to watch his games but changing the channel on the living room tv that you're already using?? Where's Miss Manners when you need her...this creep hasn't got a clue. :x

We really feel for ya, Notafan! Welcome to the forum.

Lesson to all the single people out there: don't pair up with a sports addict!!! :?

Hi Notafan, and welcome to the forum.

My wife and I read your post and she wants to know how many times he's chosen sports over you?

I also have a test for you to try to see if he's a typical closet gay sports fan. Get dressed up in your sexiest duds when there's a game on and see which he picks - you or the game?
Odds are he'll pick the game.

If he picks a stupid game over his wife in sexy lingerie (like many men do) then it's time to put your foot down!
My wife said she never thought she would find a guy like me who didn't like sports, or actually HATED sports as much as her. Yes we exist, and we're all on this site!!!! I love this site! Rock On!
Sports is a disease. I am horror movie fanatic/writer/film maker, thats something sport guys dont understand either (anything "artsy")but NEVER would I put THAT before my wife. She always comes first. I think it's bullshit and you should stand up and tell him whats up, you know you want to.
