What the hell? Much less than one percent of high school athletes go pro, and I don't know why you brought up Bill Gates?

High school sports, for again more than 99 percent of people aren't about . . . . .

Video games are better for you than sports? Sitting at home in front of a TV is better for you than going out and being active?

Horrible....

Yes! One is fun, the other is threatening. No affect or negative affect?

Threatening? Or actually living your life and going out and doing something?

I'd tend to say the latter...

In a lot on inner city neighborhoods, it's actually not safe for kids to go outside and play anymore because of the drugs and crime.

So, it's safer to stay indoors, and play video games.

Of course, if you want to get more exercise, you can just put away the video games, watch football on TV, jump up and down and scream like a drooling moron when some monkey-boy fails to score a touchdown, and then, beat the holy crap out of your wives and kids when your favorite team loses the big game of the season!

Yeah! Sounds like good exercise to me! You'll burn a lot of calories that way!

But it still doesn't result in any weight loss, because, just look at the big beer-guts on some of them redneck sports fans who can't even keep their own pants from falling down!

I just can't believe you guys are seriously arguing it's better to stay inside all day then to go out and be active.

When I was a kid, I found all kinds of fun ways to be active.

I had a Gilbert Microscope & Lab Kit, and I would hike into the woods to collect specimens to examine under my microscope. Exploring the forest would involve climbing rocks, sometimes climbing a tree, and hiking for a few miles. Also, I would pick wild blue berries and wild rhubarb, or I would hike along the railroad track and pick wild raspberries.

Another activity I enjoyed was riding my bicycle. I would peddle about 7 miles out of town to visit some friends of the family who had a dairy farm.

One day while hiking in the woods, I discovered this small brook, so I gathered some rocks together to build a dam, and I made a sizable pond that I could wade in. I would put on some swim shorts, and go to the pond I had created and sit down in the nice cool water on hot summer days.

This was when I lived up in Minnesota.

I was 13 when our family moved down to the southwest, and when I saw the desert plants for the first time, I went crazy, because I loved collecting some cactus to bring them home to transplant in my cactus garden.

I also liked flying a kite, or flying planes.

And I liked swimming.

So, there were many ways, many fun ways to be active.

Notice, that none of my activities involved sports, chasing balls! Nothing so mindless as that!

But I lived in a small town and not in some big city. Of course, in my neighborhood there were bullies to contend with, so, instead of playing in my neighborhood, I would hike off into the woods, or ride my bike out of town.

But now, so many kids live in the inner cities where their neighborhood are not safe, again because of the drugs and crime.

Of course, if you're a bully, you can always play ball with all of your other monkey-boy friends who are also bullies just like you!

But for the good kids who aren't bullies, it's not safe for them to go out, so they stay home instead and playing video games. Many of these neighborhood don't even have decent parks or playgrounds, and the ones that do have playgrounds, they have often been taken over by the bullies. In many cities, it's not safe for the good kids to go outside anymore.

So, it's better to stay inside, because thanks to all you monkey-boys, it's a dangerous jungle out there!

Yeah, I know what you're probably going to say . . . that if these kids went out and got more exercise, the would be strong enough to fight off the bullies.

I have a better idea!

How about if you monkey-boys would just keep your slimy hands to yourselves, and not lay your monkey paws on the good kids, and just leave them alone!

Exercise is suppose to be fun, and not training for combat against you monkey-boys.

So, you monkey-boys should be shipped of to some jungle on a desert island somewhere, since you don't belong in civilization.

Then it will much safer for the good kids to go out and play.

And it doesn't necessarily have to be chasing balls!!!

You got that? Monkey Boy???

Isn't that what a lot of sports bores do? Stay inside all day? That's usually where the TV is, after all, along with their couch. I don't see many sports bores outside being active when there's a game on. Of course they tend to yell and dance around and act like idiots whenever their team scores. I suppose that could get rather lively. Doesn't seem to help shrink the fat asses a lot of them seem to have, though.

Polite24 wrote:Yeah, but you need a balance between work and fun. Life needs to be enjoyed, and not taken so seriously all the time. Do you realize how lifeless schools would be without sports? It would be a bunch of zombies walking around just bored to death.

And, ironically enough, it's those that participate in after school activities, whether that be playing or spectating, that are the most well rounded students.
Well rounded according to whose standards? This is a school standard that has been mercilessly touted for a hundred years or more, that has never, and will never make sense.

The fact that someone can throw a ball one-hundred yards fails to move or impress me.

What about people like me? People who liked to bike or run in their spare time as a way of getting exercise? I could ride a bike up a hill faster than most of my peers by high school, because I had been doing it since I was eight years old.

Yet, that does not earn me the 'well-rounded' tag by your rationale, because I didn't join in socially with all the assholes who treated me like shit for not liking their precious little baseball or football game. Kids in high school sports compete to win, and they are taught to do it just as viciously as their NFL peers, and if you aren't as good as they are, the only reason you get to stay on the team is to become their whipping post for amusement.

I would not define this sort of thing as 'enjoying life'. As for life being taken seriously, you can be quite assured that your precious little wuggums that play school sports take it very seriously. Don't believe me? Try doing a peaceful, non-interfering anti-football protest at a pep rally. See how long you live.

Yet, we, the anti-pro sports fandom lot, are supposed to be the assholes here.

Polite24 wrote:Again, most people do enjoy going to sporting events and socializing with their friends and peers from school.

Only because it's what their friends are doing. Nothing more. Simple peer pressure. It has nothing to do with the fact that sports has some magical power over people.

Again, take sports out of high school and you have big, big problems.
Take sports out of high school, and other hobbies will take over. Kids will find something to do. They're more intelligent than you give them credit for.

I don't know how many times I'm going to have to repeat this, but it was never the sport itself, be it baseball, basketball, football, etc., that we are putting on the plate. It's the culture that comes with it that is unhealthy.

Anywho... [need to break the tension]
Indeed, culture can be killer when it comes to sports. Culture makes us believe that someone who can throw a ball 100 ft. is a god, but there are some intelligent people who effortlessly disobey and ignore what their society tells them what is cool and how to act. I, for example, don't wear slutty clothes and flirt with every guy I see compared to most of the chicks in my school. Just a simple thought process that not everyone has either gotten or learned how to use. Here's how it goes:

* Wrong to do = Showing off your asscheeks in public is near as wrong as streaking.
Cussing can be quite offensive to other cultures, let alone not covering yourself....
*Plain stupidity = Flirting with every possible person in existance that you can see.
Picking fights with everyone that you view as possible competition when it comes to picking a date...

The list goes on!

And imagine this: it only takes a couple trillionths of a second to review through this whole thought process for a normally functioning mind! I've seen people do something stupid, only to see them realize a day later that it was stupid. Pitiful, I know... Most people weren't raised to think like this, only raised to think that you have to have as much fun as you can every single day for the rest of your life or you're a weirdo for not trying. Thus, we have more idiots running around out there than we need.
