Thanks for the compliment, recovering_fan.
But really I'm neither a conservative nor a liberal, neither a Democrat nor a Republican (or a Libertarian). I'm a man without a party (a political party, that is). Politics is so relative. In northern California (where Cycloptichorn and my sister live), I'd be considered a reactionary; but in a state like Mississippi, Alabama, or South Carolina, I'd be considered a liberal. I've even become politically apathetic and hardly ever vote (not that I'm recommending that anyone else do the same).
Last fall I joined a liberal website (http://www.democraticunderground.org) because of all the anti-bullying threads. Although some individual conservative persons were just as badly bullied in school as anyone else, political conservatives as a group seem to have far less sympathy for bullied kids than liberals do. Eventually I started a topic at that website entitled "Why don't they like sports?" under the username "bbdad." And, yes, I did receive some negative reaction from (you guessed correctly) sports fans, as well as positive responses from other members. If you visited that website and did cite searches on "jock bullies," "p.e. bullying," "phys ed bullying," or just "bullying," you would be amazed by how many of their members were bullied when they were in school. (Of course, if they knew my views on abortion and same-sex marriage, they'd probably have me banned immediately.
)
Just so no one gets the wrong impression about me, I'm not a bigot when it comes to politics. After all, when I still considered myself to be a Democrat, I married a Republican. You might say that we have a mixed marriage.
My close friends have included both conservatives and liberals. Not only that, my current best friend ("best friend" in terms of all the years I've known him) is (horror of horrors) a former high-school football player.
