Nascar is a sport. "Sport: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively." Of course this is a fairly broad definition, but it works. Perhaps video games could be considered sports based on that. Either way, Nascar is boring. The cars I have to admit are pretty sweet though.

Well, I have to admit, that I do have a lot more respect for race car drivers and Motocross drivers racing dirt bikes, than I will ever have for football players, which is none.

Yeah, auto racing is boring, just watching cars going around over and over again on an oval race track.

Motocross is more interesting, watching dirt bikes leaping in the air and it does take more skill.

I like motor cycles. I use to have a dirt bike, a Honda XL 350. Yeah, it was just a little one-lung putt-putt-job, but I use to go out exploring in the desert.

I had my own secret place where I would go to. There was a winding path through this canyon, and it was beautiful, all kinds of desert plants, especially during the spring when the dessert flowers on all the cactus and yucca were in bloom.

At my special place, there were some caves and even a window-rock. It was beautiful. I would go there, then dismount from my bike, and just sit there for a couple of hours to meditate.

I like to watch those little blue-tailed lizards scampering over the desert sand. I thought they were really cute.

Another place I enjoyed going to was McKnight Canyon Road in the Gila National forest. There was a dirt trail rising up to over 9000 feet above sea level up in the pine forests, so I had a lot of fun on my little Honda XL 350.

Eventually I got a bigger bike, a Kawasaki KZ 650 with a 4 cylinder engine. It had four carburetors, one for each cylinder. Believe me, it's more complicated to do a tune-up on a four-banger on a motor cycle than it is to do a tune up on an 8 cylinder car engine. But I loved working on my motor cycle.

Race car drivers and motor cycle racers have more intelligence than football players. They have to know about mechanics and they work on their own machines, also making modifications to improve speed, and fuel efficiency.

While they do make money from winning races, they also spend money out of their own pockets investing in their "sport" or occupation.

It takes a lot more brains to be a race car driver or a Motocross racer than it does to be a football player. You have to know how to work on machines, and it takes some intelligence to invent new ways to increase fuel efficiency. They do a lot of research that eventually goes to improving motor vehicles for everyone else.

Many of latest improvements in the family car may be the result of the research conducted by these "motor-jocks" and so, that is why I have a lot more respect for them than I have for football players.

Football has no benefit at all to society.

Yeah! I agree that watching race cars going around and around on an oval track is boring, but I do have more respect for motor-jocks than I will ever have for regular jock-jocks!!!

Also, motor-jocks are gentlemen compared to your regular jock-jocks!

NASCAR might just be the most retarded "sport" next to competitive eating. You still have to understand that you might not get exercise but it is still sort of a sport.

Yes, I'm sure for you sports retards turning a wheel every now and again is a very mentally challenging task indeed. Millions of us normal people can do it without a fuss. There's nothing special aboot driving like a moron as we all know!

NASCAR is considered a sport by many. So what. It is just cars going real fast around an oval. They go straight for awhile and then turning left and then going straight again. I think the fans like the accidents more than the actual racing. It is as dumb as all of the other pro sports. Are the drivers athelets? I guess if you consider sweating and getting tired athletic.

I really think that NASCAR is one of the few sports that is the easiest to follow if your drunk. After all they only go around in a circle, however, most of the fans would probably not even get that if they were drunk.

Actually they don't go around in a circle. The track is an oval. If you want to see a very funny take on this go to ONION website and look for NASCAR coach. It is hilarious.

Well to crudely cap off this argument, I shall state once again...
It's ok for children to be entertained by cars going around, and around, and around on a track for hours, but if it's an adult that's entertained then it's just scary.

I'm going to preface: I hate NASCAR. However, I have loved cars for many years, namely working on and driving (and track racing) my own car. I like autosports for that reason: I respect the engineering that goes into those machines and, well, I like to go fast. That said, NASCAR is boring as hell. Go fast, turn left, is a snoozefest. Why NASCAR is so popular but track racing (Rolex Cup, for example) and Formula 1 can't seem to stay on TV is beyond me.

That's me track racing my tC.

Well, personally, I do enjoy watching Motocross racing on dirt bikes, because I love motorcycles.

In motocross, it's not just going around and around on a boring oval track. There are left hand turns and right hand turns, and steep hills and leaping in the air over arroyo or narrow river beds, and even the occasional flip while leaping into the air.

Motocross is a lot more exciting than auto racing on an oval track.

It takes a lot more skill to ride a motorcycle than it does to drive a car.

I once had a Honda XL 350, an Enduro with a single cylinder 4 stroke engine which is a cross between a street legal bike and a dirt bike. It had the high fenders like a typical dirt bike and equipped with signal lights to make it street legal.

And then, I also had a Kawasaki KZ 650 with a four cylinder engine, a regular street bike. I loved that bike!

I would love to get another motorcycle, but since I live in a 9 story high rise, I hesitate to leave a motorcycle parked in the parking lot where I can't keep an eye on it.

Now, if I could rent one of the ground level cottages then I would get another motorcycle and I would have a sheet of plywood on the living room floor and bring my motorcycle indoors when I'm at home from riding around town and park it on the sheet of plywood to protect the floor.

There is nothing like riding on a motorcycle. It's almost like flying on a witch's broom!

Also, you don't "drive" a motorcycle, you RIDE a motorcycle!

And motorcycles don't have motors, they have engines!

And a motorcycle does not have an accelerator, it has a throttle!

You gotta learn the proper terminology if your gonna be a throttle jockey!

I'm going to say that I do disagree with many posts made in this topic. I don't think all people who watch NASCAR are braindead. And I think it's an extremely big overstatement to say that it requires no talent to race on an oval track. I don't think anybody here could compete with any NASCAR driver on any kind of track, including an oval one. It still requires a lot of skill and technique. My father rarely watches a sporting event other than NASCAR, he'll only watch maybe an Olympic hockey game if Canada is in the finals, or the Superbowl once every couple years. However, he does love motorsports, including NASCAR. I respect my father's interest in the series, I used to be interested in it myself, but it's not really for me anymore. I'll still occasionally stop by the TV when my Dad is watching for a few minutes and see a bit of the race if he wants me to see part of it. Just like other sports, even if they are overpaid, you must admit that it does require skill to do it. And just like sports, even though a large amount of the audience may be viewed in a negative manner, not all of them are the same.

Well, I think the easiest way to put thing is, which requires more skill, rallying, or NASCAR racing (or whatever the verb is).
And NASCAR, I have watched some parts of it on sattelite. It is boring. No twist and turns, just round, round and round again. The only factor people like, I think, is pile ups, crashes, and generally people getting hurt.

Nice picture you've got there, sf2k4. It's interesting to see a sports fan that respects the technical aspect of racing sports. Most of the fans, I believe, are just wanting to see pile-ups, major crashes and people risking their lives by going at moronic speeds. I think the reason why NASCAR is so popular is because modern people enjoy watching others put their lives on the line to entertain them. This is how far some people will go to please the fans and get those seats filled. Yet I don't think the fans truly appreciate the dangers some of the drivers are putting themselves in to entertain them.

Best regards,

If it were mentally challenging it shouldn't be call sport. Sport is the opposet of mentally challenging.
um sports can be mentally challenging. When I played tennis I had to think a great deal about strategy, where weak points were, how to hit the ball.
lots of strategy
