Re: Seven Reasons Why Football Sucks!
Polite24, you have a basic misunderstanding about the very nature of rape (shared by a lot of people, incidentally), regardless of who the perpetrators are. Rape is not mostly about lust; it's about humiliation, domination, and control. Young, sexy women are not the only victims of rape. They may not even be the majority. Did you know that elderly women get raped? Without meaning to be disrespectful of our senior citizens, does lust play a role in the rape of elderly women by young punks? No, I don't think so. Plain-looking young women who are not physically attractive also get raped. In a society where free sex has become readily available, why hasn't rape gone down? Some psychologists and sociologists believe that rape has actually gone up in the last 50 years. Please think carefully about this issue, and learn about it. The ramifications of this issue go way, way, way beyond football and, in a way, have nothing to do with it.
Please ask yourself on what you base your opinions. I suspect that your views (along with those of many others) about football as an institution are shaped entirely by the sports media, which rarely (if ever) does any investigative reporting on rape allegations against athletes. The problem with relying on the sports media, whose bias is even more extreme than the political bias of either the liberal news media or the conservative news media, is that it does not report all that is going on in the world of sports. I could give you specific examples, but time now does not permit. In other words, through no fault of your own, you're simply not well-informed. And I'm not insulting you or engaging in name-calling. Even if you start calling me names, I will not respond in kind.
I've already told you that you need to do some research. There's a lot you don't know. When I was your age, I certainly was ill-informed on various issues and subjects. I've already directed you to specific references that you can check. I'm sure there are even more. You just need to look for them. You need to keep an open mind, and take the time to do the research. Again, the question is not whether rape by high-school and college football players is common or rare. The issue is whether those players who do commit rape are able to get away with it, and I'm convinced that in most cases they are able to get away with it. I don't want football programs to be done away. I just want them to be reformed.
BTW, before I forget, if I read your post correctly, you at least seem to have been open-minded about Kathy Redmond's case. I have to commend you for that.

Re: Seven Reasons Why Football Sucks!
I suggest that Polite24 goes to my topic titled JOCK CRIMES at:
http://www.sportssuck.org/phpbb2/viewto ... f=1&t=1035
But if he's too lazy to go over to my topic, then I shall re-post the article here.
This is from the ABC NEWS web site is at:
http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/story?id=1857059&page=1
I know it's an old article from April of 2006 but nothing has really changed since then.
So, it appears that the percentages of male athletes committing sexual assault crimes is disproportionately high compared to the rest of the male population.
But the conviction rate for male athletes who commit sexual assaults is disproportionately lower than it is for the rest of the general male population.
Therefore, a monkey-boy is more likely to rape someone than most males but less likely to be convicted.

Studies Find College Athletes More Likely to Commit Sexual Assault
By JAKE TAPPER and AUDREY TAYLOR
April 18, 2006
A year before Duke University's lacrosse team became the center of scandal, administrators and the school's athletic director were warned that the players had demonstrated "boorish" behavior.
According to news reports, 15 of the team's 47 players have court records for drunken and disorderly behavior. Two were arrested today on charges of raping and kidnapping a 27-year-old woman at an off-campus party.
The alleged incident may be part of a larger problem, experts said, of athletes whose attitude includes a sense of entitlement that manifests itself in crude and even lawless behavior. Indeed, Duke University announced it had appointed a committee to investigate "the extent to which the cumulative behavior of many [players] over a number of years signifies a deeper problem."
One study of sexual assault cases found that while male student athletes make up 3.3 percent of the college population, they committed 19 percent of the sexual assaults. The Benedict-Crosset Study of sexual assaults at 30 major Division I universities over a three-year period in the 1990s concludes that "male college student athletes, compared to the rest of the male population, are responsible for a significantly higher percentage of sexual assaults reported to judicial affairs on the campuses of Division I institutions."
"There is a mentality among athletes that 'we can get away with this, that no one is going to challenge us because we are student athletes,'" said Richard Lapchick, professor at the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.
In recent years there have been allegations made against rugby players that included improper sexual conduct and rape at San Diego State, against basketball players at South Dakota State, and against football players at Penn State, the Coast Guard Academy, the Naval Academy, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Colorado.
Athletes Given Star Status
If the athletes carry an entitled attitude it, could be partly due to the way they are treated long before they ever arrive on a university campus. "They are given star status at 17, 18 and 19 years old," said UC Berkeley sociology professor Harry Edwards. "That is unprecedented."
The special treatment continues with highly competitive recruitment programs, some of which use women students as escorts and as a sort of enticement. "The unspoken assumption is that if you come here I'm going to be here for you," said Edwards.
It all starts to go to the heads of these athletes, especially once they enroll and are given all sorts of special privileges and star status. They become narcissistic, said psychologist William Pollack, director of McLean Hospital's Centers for Men and Young Men.
"They feel like they are gods, they can do anything," Pollack said. "They lose touch and sometimes they get lubricated with alcohol and women become a prize."
But former college athlete and coach Peter Roby, director of Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, disagreed that this is a problem for athletes specifically. The former basketball player for Dartmouth College said damning the athletes misses the larger point. This is how society instructs men in general to behave, he said, and athletes have merely achieved the pinnacle of that goal.
"We have to be careful about sending a message to young boys in particular about toughness and how important it is," Roby says, "because it's going to lead them to make decisions that are going to result in them doing some things that society is going to say, 'How the heck could that ever happen?'"
On the field, athletics teach determination, sportsmanship and discipline. But without proper supervision, athletes are learning some ugly lessons as well.
ABC News' Tarana Harris and Lisa Chinn contributed to this report.
One study of sexual assault cases found that while male student athletes make up 3.3 percent of the college population, they committed 19 percent of the sexual assaults.
So, it appears that the percentages of male athletes committing sexual assault crimes is disproportionately high compared to the rest of the male population.

You respond to my valid points with BS and insults, so I shouldn't even give this a reply, but I will.
Obviously that's a problem, and something that I wasn't aware of. I won't defend athletes there.

When the fuck did I defend rape? Don't bash me for comprehension when it's clear you have trouble with comprehension yourself. I clearly stated there was obviously something wrong there.
And just because I didn't reply right away doesn't mean I didn't comprehend it.

Since they are also sports jocks?
And abitagirl, you forgot about the Native Americans' ordeal with being pushed off their lands by the decision of many Americans.

Re: Seven Reasons Why Football Sucks!
7. Football games usually have a very large amount of viewers, and so companies are willing to pay a lot of money to advertise during them.
6. Kicking was used more often in the earlier days of the game, when it was first evolving from rugby and soccer, so that's where the name comes from.
5. Members of the football team or any other high school sport don't get to skip class for practice, it's always after school. And despite what some people here think, playing football or any other sport in high school isn't an automatic ticket to popularity.
4. Did it ever occur to you that there are a lot of people who are of Irish descent and/or Catholic, and so they would want to root for a team that's identified with those things?
3. If you don't like certain foods, don't eat them.
2. I know it annoys you, but the Super Bowl has become a part of American culture whether you like it or not. There are plenty of other things to do if you're not interested.
1. This is a legitimate complaint, because players acting like that is annoying and is bad sportsmanship. But like other people on here you have to accuse that of being gay even though you yourself were thought of as gay growing up for not liking sports. So much for this website claiming to be tolerant of people's differences.
