I love DBZ, one of the best programmes ever made. I've seeen that they've rebooted it in Japan and it looks really good. I can't wait to see thee English dub.

DUB? Wow, I always prefer raw or sub. (Why dub- I do admit, the quality of dubbing has increased, but it is still a bit dodgey)

Nobody has posted in this thread for a while, but I just want to say how much I love it.

Why?

Because I have no clue what any of you are talking about in it! I don't feel I am very cultured in terms of anime knowledge, but I think it's great we have someone from Japan who is and can at least tell us all what's out there--why he prefers "this to that" so to speak. Because of Imperialist, we are able to expand our horizons. Just because not everyone understands his highbrow tastes does not, in my view, mean that he shouldn't explain them to us. They are quite fascinating, I find, though I do not fully grasp them.

~~~
I will just briefly list my own favourite anime and manga, and explain why:
Favourite manga, Gunnm (a.k.a. Battle Angel Alita): I guess this may bother some people, because it does involve a violent girl beating guys up. But I think it's important to understand that Gally (Alita) is a positive character with a sense of right and wrong. I liked the manga for two reasons:
(1) I am a guy with poor rhetorical skills (when speaking in real time) and poor social skills who has been harassed his entire life by other guys. Their special way of abusing me has been to do things like pulling rank, intentionally misunderstanding me for the sole purpose of "winning" an argument, and drowning out my ideas through the sheer noise of their superior numbers. (Try reasoning with a Hydra some time. It's real fun.) Who has made life bearable? Girls. Sometimes, when I was confronted with a particularly hostile male authority figure, the girl would speak on my behalf. Sometimes, when I was surrounded by a mob of grunts who told me I was speaking nonsense, a girl would appear and smile at me, ignoring them, and say there was something to my remarks. Gally presents a nice metaphor for how my entire life has been, except with mortal combat filling in for social interaction. (And, no, I did not need girls to defend me in physical altercations. Nor am I attracted to physically overpowering girls like Gally in real life.)
(2) I have lost many things in life, and Gally loses some things. My favourite scene is probably on the train, when she tells Figure to keep away from her. (I don't think that's too much of a spoiler?)
Favourite anime, Death Note: I am not a fan of using one's mind to murder criminals without trial, but the main characters are so damn smart in this one that you just have to love it.
~~~

Anyway, I mainly posted in this thread so that people would no longer be too intimidated to post in the watched/read thread. Even though I don't know anime as well as Imperialist knows it, I have my views on anime and thought they might interest people. I discovered Death Note (an anime for teen boys?) when I was 29, but I am not ashamed to say I like it. Meanwhile, in the other thread, if you like popular entertainment, that's great :) , and I'd like to hear why people like particular popular shows, too. I could probably talk for about an hour about why I used to watch C o l i n _ C o w h e r d. And a show could not possibly have less "snob appeal" than his show,
S p o r t s N a t i o n. (The fact is, I do like "snobby" movies, and I can't change that. I'm not going to pretend that I don't like that highbrow shit when I do. Sorry.) 8)

I would discourage people in the watched/read thread from giving the intimate type of reasons I gave here for why they liked stuff. I will now be leaving the site for some time. At least until I turn 31. And I will be cutting off contact to the full extent that I can. Please don't contact me, but don't ban me either, because I would like to return some day.

Thanks, and good luck.

Wait, did I miss something? You're leaving the site? Why? What's going on? :?

What? Why are you leaving? You were a great addition to this site, and I feel you have contributed quite a bit. And how old are you now if you are coming back when you are 31 at earliest?

I suppose you may have already left the site and will not read this post (at least not until you come back), but I don't understand why you are leaving.

Thanks for your reply, HugeFan:

I mainly felt like leaving because sometimes I will post stuff and no one will reply. At that point I think that perhaps I've managed to scare everyone off and kill the thread, and that if I keep posting it will kill the forum entirely.

Yes, that's reason number three why I liked that well-intentioned young woman from Gunnm. Like myself, she seemed to have the Midas touch in reverse. (Hehe, I managed to tie this back in with anime. :) )

Don't worry. I'll post, but not as often or as aggressively.

Okay, it's good that you're not leaving. Don't worry if many people aren't responding to your posts, this forum isn't the most active. I don't always get to make a lot of responses because I've been quite busy with schoolwork and I don't get to post as much as I'd like to. I often won't respond to a lot of posts unless they are directed towards me or if I have something to add to it, or I may post if there is something I disagree with in a post, so don't feel ignored if people aren't responding to your posts, I feel you've been a good addition to this site since you joined.

Well, I'm glad to hear you're staying with us. And please don't assume you're a "conversation killer" - heck, look how many times my name appears in the Last Post section on the various subforums, especially the "Sports Suck!" one. The only thing that will kill a conversation or debate is a stupid, unfounded or daft post. If you've made a sensible and relevant post and nobody is responding, it probably means that the topic has been discussed enough and there is nothing new to add to it. It's nothing personal, unless some sports bore comes blasting onto the scene thinking he's great and trying to draw angry responses, in which case he probably won't be ignored - we do like arguments on here. Nonetheless, don't worry about it. You're not the only one who posts on here and doesn't get responses. It's happened to just about every regular member here. I hope to see more of you on this forum.

Best regards,
i_like_1981

Anyone here like magical girl anime? I doubt it but it's worth asking.

I wonder where The Imperialist himself has gotten to? Those most poetic posts of his have seemed to just vanish from this forum. Oh well, people have lives, I guess. We're not all like me. :D

You'd have to ask The Imperialist himself about that, MesiTheJackal. He's probably the anime master on here. Or am I being too quick to assume things again?

Best regards,

There was a girl about your age who used to post here and said she was into "drawing", but we haven't heard from her in awhile. And then, as my English friend says, there is the legendary Imperialist, who hosts his own anime club. :wink:

The only magical "girls" I follow these days are the women in Marion Zimmer Bradley novels, who have all been granted magical powers by the author.
(But that's not anime, I know, and usually their only real power is telepathy.)

I did rent The Cat Returns once, but that was mainly about magical cats.

Cheers,
R.F.

Rather late, but magical girl anime.

Hm. Well, I think the best is Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, and even though I am not a great fan of it, certain magical girl anime is awesome.
