I still suspect that Mike_the_pain_train is nothing more than a choo-choo boy, a little boy either in junior high or possibly elementary school.Katrin wrote:I wouldn't say all jocks are like that, greencom. In fairness to them, SportsGuy92 and Polite24 don't appear to reinforce the dumb abusive jock stereotype a lot of us believe in... however, Samdaman and Mike the pain train do. As with all kinds of people, you get nasty and nice sports people, but people here have obviously felt the nasty side of them more in their lives so that is why all sports people on here get treated with some contempt, regardless of their attitude to us.
Bring it on, choo-choo boy!

Anyone who still thinks most or all people who like sports are stupid: do you think these places fill up with idiotic, illiterate monkeys every day there's a game going on?

You probably know this already, but I don't think that most people who like sports are idiotic and stupid.

That guy sounds like a certain forum member at another website whose username I won't mention, someone we both know about, eh, Ray?Ray wrote:I agree. I know it's not politically correct to say this but stereotypes don't materialize out of nowhere. There's always a grain of truth to them. Where there's smoke, there's fire, etc.
Most of the large, athletic guys I have rubbed elbows with tended to make a point of emphasizing their past football prowess --even when nobody wanted to hear about it --and described everything they encountered in football terms. They're almost always subtle or obvious jerks and widely disliked and avoided. They're high school bullies who've grown up and still enjoy making everyone around them miserable.
I work with one of these clods. This guy comes to work every day with stories of how he came out ahead in every confrontation. He always gets his way in department stores, with neighbors, police, etc. He never tires of bragging about his exploits. But I did get some benefit from our forced association: I learned where assholes come from. He occasionally entertains us with stories of how he shouts down people who complain about his loud talking and guffaws in the theater --while he's with his SON! By acting so agressively with his son present, he's teaching his son how to behave in public. So now I know where jerks come from --they're raised by big assholes. (or should I say JOCKS?)

Do you not believe that enough idiotic, illiterate monkeys exist to fill a stadium? They do! It just seems weird to see them all in one place.
Stadiums feature low-brow entertainment that appeals to a certain class of people. It's no wonder that they it draws the morons like flies and quickly fills up like a roach motel.

To Earl:
First I want to let you know, if you didn't already, that none of my criticisms apply to you. I know that you're not someone who has a problem with sports in general, just the way they can cause some people to behave and how being interested in them is often necessary in order to be accepted by others. But I just want to make a few comments about your replies.
I think you need to hear about what my views on homosexuality are in order to understand where I'm coming from. Because of my religion, I believe that gay sex is a sin. However I don't have anything against people for being attracted to the same sex. If one of my friends ever told me he was gay, he would have my full support just as long as he didn't try to start flirting with me. So while I believe sexual acts between gay people are wrong, I was just trying to speak out against homophobia with my post. Most other Catholics who are not bigots have the same views. For example, last year, when I had began a new theology class at my Catholic high school, I had been assigned a teacher who has the reputation of being a hard core conservative both in politics and religion. Throughout the course, he would make these opinions well-known to us. But on the first day, he gave us a handout that he had written which, among other things, railed against homophobia, especially the way certain popular musicians use it in their songs and make it more culturally acceptable. So, I just see the way some people who might have been accused of being gay in the past for not liking sports and then use the same kind of insults now as hypocritical.
***NOTE***: any commentary about religion is not meant to start a religious debate between anybody here. There are plenty of other websites on the Internet for that purpose.
As far as sports journalism goes, I agree that some sportswriters ignore any negative qualities their favorite athletes might have and only focus on their sports talent. Where I disagree with you is when you said "It is nothing more and nothing less than a propaganda mill whose intent is to brainwash everyone into becoming sports fans." Sports writing is not meant to brainwash everyone into becoming sports fans, because the only people who read it are sports fans already.
Finally, like I said, I've never known any athletes who could be considered bullies too, but I realize the culture might be different at other schools. It's not like I don't believe that athletes can be jerks too. It's just the way Fat Man, greencom, and Geno stereotype all athletes as bullies from their bad experiences. I'm sure the few bad athletes at at their schools were outnumbered by ones who were respectful.

Greencom
In case you didn't know, the basketball game is at Duke University and the football game is at the University of Notre Dame, two colleges where you have to be extremely intelligent to be admitted (some kids turn down Harvard and Yale for these schools) and where sports are also extremely popular with the students.Ray wrote:Que?
