Why is it that Michael Jordan is a global icon as famous as any celebrity or politician, instead of random Australian Basketball League player guy who'd never make it in the NBA?

Sportsguy, I really don't think you can imagine how incredibly dull that kind of talk is to a sports hater. To a sports hater, that kind of talk is like listening to a couple of 5 year old kids discussing who is better - Batman or Superman. Sports talk is really just the grown ups version of that.

There must be thousands of sporting websites out there where you can have such conversations, and you really need to go to them if you like having such conversations.

I donâ??t believe that either SportsGuy92 or Polite24 is a racist or that they have belittled the people of Australia, which has always been a great friend of the United States. In fact, Iâ??ve never heard of any American belittling the Australians. I agree with Sergey that thereâ??s been way too much flaming going on. With only occasional lapses on their part (which is perfectly understandable), Polite and SportsGuy have actually been rather restrained in their responses to all the name-calling to which they have been subjected. They are not like Samdaman, SpeedofLeicht, and the others. I dare say that theyâ??re decent kids, which doesnâ??t mean that I agree with everything they say. When you use such insults against posters like Polite and SportsGuy, the effectiveness of your language is watered down; and you have nothing left to adequately describe someone who really is a hateful jerk.

On the other hand, SportsGuy and Polite need to recognize that this website was set up for sports haters and that this forum is a rant board. That is the purpose of this website. This website is like political websites. â??Fair and balancedâ? is just not going to happen. For example, political conservatives should not expect liberal websites to give a fair hearing to conservatism and conservatives (and vice versa). In the same way, we donâ??t expect to go to sports websites and talk about how boring sports are to us or how much we dislike them.

This website is one of those few places where people who donâ??t like sports can express themselves in a setting that is supportive. I completely understand dickfilthyâ??s resentment about arguing with someone about sports at a website that was set up for people who either actively dislike or are just not interested in sports. But this website is open to the public. Anyone can join the forum, and some (possibly the majority) of the other â??anti-sportsâ? members want sports fans to participate in the forum. Some would even welcome a return by Samdaman just so they could fight with him. So, you might say that leaves us between the proverbial rock and the hard place.

Regarding your two observations ...
(1) Most of the members use bad language at one time or another.
(2) Perhaps Iâ??ve not read all the posts of this topic carefully enough, but it seems to me that you first felt insulted when Polite24 appeared to demean your country. Both SportsGuy92 and Polite24 have said that was not their intent and that they did not mean to insult you. Although you may not believe them, I think you should accept their claims at face value. I have reason to trust them as being sincere. The way I see it, there are two kinds of conflict. There is conflict that is unavoidable because some moral principle is involved, and there is conflict that is needless and does no good. Perhaps youâ??ve misunderstood them. Thatâ??s easy to do at a website. At another forum earlier this year, I went on the offensive and bitterly denounced one of the other posters after possibly misconstruing one of his comments. I hope I haven't discouraged or irritated you. I'm just trying to help out in my dopey but sincere sort of way.

As a moderator in this forum, Iâ??d like to make a comment for all the members. If you have a personal resentment against another member, please seriously consider the possibility of trying to resolve the conflict with him (or her) by using the PM feature or the e-mail button (if one is available). You're in a unique setting here that is different from dealing with someone at school or on the job. With privacy you donâ??t have the problem of feeling forced into some kind of inhibitory role.
