Aren't sports games one of the few ways a school can make money for itself?

I guess so. I'm not well enough informed about that issue; so, I really can't say one way or the other.

In another post SEAL76 pointed out that the school district where he teaches is in financial trouble but has refused to make any cuts in the sports programs. Instead, they have fired teachers and have also cut programs that were set up for the neediest students. In other words, the sports programs have been completely exempted from having to bear any of the financial burden, as if they are sacred and more important than anything else. Not many years ago I read that the head football coach at a high school in Round Rock, Texas, was being paid three times as much as any other teacher. Yes, I realize that high-school football coaches are going to be paid more than other teachers, given the low salary that teachers usually receive; but they should be paid that much? Maybe there's something I don't know, but that just doesn't seem right to me.

They should have cut spending in the athletic department as well, but to eliminate sports completely would hurt them in the long run.

I don't think he's saying that sports are better than video games. I think he's saying that one is as good as the other, but I could be wrong. We need a clarification. Perhaps you should ask him exactly what he means. On second thought, you don't need to ask him. I'm sure he'll read this post. I wonder if he wants to understand why we are critical of the sports culture, or if he just wants to prove us wrong.

Yes, textbooks are expensive.

So, some schools have resorted to firing math teachers to hire more PE coaches, and also, so they can spend more money on sports.

That's because it's still cheaper to put up new basketball hoops and by new football uniforms and helmets than it is to buy new equipment for a chemistry or physics lab.

But in the long run, society is going to pay a much higher price when more and more people go uneducated and end up living in poverty.

Oh! That's right! They should become football players! DUH!!!
