How Sports Is Destroying Our Schools

Post by Fat Man »

I for one, am getting damn sick and tired of these sports bore who keep cramming sports down our throats, and continuously trying to convince me how sports are supposedly a great thing for our schools, when in fact, it has been the exact opposite.

The classroom subjects have all been dumbed down to make it easier for the jocks to get passing grades so they may play football.

We have a situation where many high school graduates can not even read or write beyond the 5th grade level.

And in some classrooms they don't even teach anymore, but instead, they play game like Charades, or watch cartoons. The only thing the students are being taught these days is how to fold a paper football!

I got so disgusted with my high school, and I had to leave my school after my life was threaten by some dope dealers that I so stupidly tried to turn in after they had been harassing me.

I never did get a high school diploma, so instead, I studied hard to get a GED Certificate instead. To get that GED certificate, you have to pass all of the tests, in science, math, history, literature, and social studies.

Another words, you have to be able to read and write way beyond the 5th grade level, you have to pass 12 grade level tests to score high enough to get that GED certificate. Many high school graduates would not be able to get a GED certificate.

If I owned a company, and I was hiring young people, I would hire someone with a GED certificate long before I would hire somebody with a high school diploma. Any dumb-ass can get a high school diploma because of the dumbed down curriculum.

If you were to come to me, with a high school diploma, I would take just one quick look at it, and toss it back to you and say . . .

That, and a dollar, will get you a cup of coffee!

I know what you're saying. We're doing this thing in my English class called Literature Circles [yea I know, it's as gay as it sounds], and this one dude we have to read with in our group can't even say half the words that are printed in the book! It took one minute just to read an average 5 sentence paragraph with him, but when it came to this other girl we had to work with, it took her a good 30 seconds to read a short dialogue paragraph. Pitiful, yes? It only took me 30 seconds to read a 6 sentence paragraph that had German printed in it! [By the way, the book we're reading is called "The Fighting Ground".]

I read at a 12 grade level in 3rd grade, so I do not want to know what level those kids were reading at in that grade. I could chose any book in the whole library in my elementary school without the teachers objecting to the difficulty level, while I saw a teacher pushing a kid around, almost saying "no don't get that one - it's gonna be too hard. Heck, skip this shelf..." It's a big shame and I dearly fear for the future, but NOOOOOOO sports is the biggest priority in the teachers' eyes these days and they think it's the best thing that's happened to them since God walked the Earth. Even more pitiful is that this type of thinking isn't limited to the cornfeds in the Midwest, but all across the world.

First off, classrooms are not dumbed down for athletes. I don't know where you get this stuff.

The fact is, more people are getting educated today then ever before, because more and more people are going to high school and college. Again, talking out of your ass.

Do you even know what you're talking about with the GED bullshit? You have to pass the tests in real high school too, and the GED ones are not any harder, what sense would that make?

And your company would be run very poorly if you hired people with GED's. Most people who get GED's are the ones who fucked up in high school and had to go back. Good luck with that.

Yeah! Well, I had to get a GED certificate, not because I fucked up in high school, but because some dope dealing monkey-boys fucked me over.

They kept harassing me, trying to sell me some dope, and I wanted absolutely nothing to do with the drug scene.

I was harassed continuously and I got so sick and tired of it, that I finally turned them in!

Well, that turned out to be a stupid mistake on my part!

Because after that, the harassment became even more intense, and after threats were made against my life, I had to drop out of high school for my own safety.

That's why I had to study on my own to get my GED certificate.

So, have a cup of coffee on me!

Better yet . . . . .

Why don't you just pour yourself a nice hot cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

DSF, the rules apply to you, too. Stop quoting images.
§12) Remove image tags when quoting a post containing an image

If you quote a post that contains an image, please remove the image tag so that the link is posted, not the image. It helps keep the thread tidy and easier to read if the same image isn't being posted repeatedly. You need only delete one square bracket [ or the forward slash / to stop the image from hotlinking.

The sports fans are not as hard as they like to think they are. A few of them came leaving crap on the Guestbook last month so I gave them some abuse back... THEN they started whining about my "foul language" and "ignorance"! Bloody wimps can't take what they give. We have been led to believe that these people are bullies and hard nuts who pick on all those not like them... but they're just cowards. I expected more hostility than that!...
Best guestbook comment ever!:

I THINK ALL SPORTS ARE TOTAL RUBBISH. THEY SHOULD BE BANNED FROM TV. THEN ALL PEOPLE WHO TAKE PART IN THE SPORTS SHOULD BE PUT AGAINST A WALL AND SHOT AND KILLED.

What pushes my buttons the most is how much "These Fans" give into their fav sports team/player.
Well what have they ever done for you.
I BET anyone if you were stuck at a bus stop with no money or phone more likely a construction worker would help you than these egocentric sports players.

I just found an interesting Christian Science Monitor column entitled "Columbine and the folly of overvaluing school sports" by Jonathan Zimmerman. This column was posted only three days ago. One of the statements that caught my attention was the following: "At Permian High School in Odessa, Texas -- made famous by the H.G. Bissinger book 'Friday Night Lights' -- school officials spent $70,000 for a chartered airplane to fly the football team to visiting games. Meanwhile, the school's textbooks were 15 years out of date -- and nobody could come up with the money to replace them [my italics]." The website address for the article is http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0420/p09s02-coop.html

I also highly recommend the book Nerds: Who They Are and Why We Need More of Them by Dr. David Anderegg, a psychotherapist who teaches courses in abnormal and clinical psychology and the psychology of creativity at Bennington College. His website is htttp://drdavidanderegg.com

By the way, I wonder if there is any sort of memento honoring Bill Gates at the high school he attended. I doubt it.

In Ancient Greece gymnasium was originally created as merely a sports facility. Other education was later integrated into it.

Now we need to do the other half. Putting useful education in was good, now we just need to eliminate the sports.

Sports isn't destroying all schools...but one of my friend's said at hers they put a ton of money they needed for education towards a new stadium for the school's football team...shame on them.

Speaking of the quality of education. . . . .

Here are some interesting facts on how our schools in the USA compare to schools in other countries around the world.

I got the following information from a web site at:

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0923110.html

International Comparison of Math, Reading, and Science
Skills Among 15-Year-Old Students.

More than 250,000 15-year old students from 41 countries participated in the assessment. The countries included all major industrialized nations (results for Britain were not available) and 11 other nations that chose to participate. The test scores are from 2003.

Mean Performance on Mathematics Scale

As you all can see, the USA dose not rank anywhere near the top. I don't know if we ever did, but at one time we did rank considerably higher than we do now.

This is pathetic!!! :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

Oh. But Dennis Miller says that scientists are just a bunch of nerds who didn't get dates in high school. They're just a bunch of losers. That's what Miller says; and we know that he must be right because, after all, he has his own radio talk show. (Of course, Miller looks and talks like a seedy lounge lizard in Las Vegas who contracted an STD from a chorus girl. I'll never forgive Fox News for promoting him.) So who cares if the good ole U.S. of A. doesn't have a high rank in the sciences? Science isn't important! And we know that scientists are just a bunch of wimps!

Heh, heh. Thanks, Fat Man. I needed that for a good laugh. Of course, I also failed to point out that Miller condones the bullying of nerds by his heroes. (Of course, we really don't need nerds, do we?) And as far as conservative radio talk show hosts go, Miller is most definitely a Johnny-come-lately. He's no one special. I've noticed that Michael Savage doesn't think much of him at all. Miller is a very small fish -- a mere minnow, come to think of it -- in a rather large pond. (I'd better stop ranting about this jerk before I succumb to the temptation to use cusswords.) And as far as intellect, class, and decency are concerned, he is dwarfed by another Dennis whose last name is Prager.

Yes, Dennis Miller is a nothing.

He's an insect, a dung beetle, batting away at his little ball of muck and fooling himself that he trundles the sun!

I was thinking of another term for Dennis Miller.
