The Old Music Thread

Post by i_like_1981 »

Well... I thought we could do with one of these. But that is very much my opinion. :D

So basically, if you ever want to give a mention to a classic old album that you recommend to others, or just talk about old music in general, or even whine about how crappy today's charts are, this is the thread to do it in. It's best that we keep all our old music debates in here instead of having them divert the courses of unrelated topics.

Oh, and one more thing, if you're going to mention a song or album in my old music thread, make sure it's from 1989 or earlier. Otherwise I'll shout it down as being shit. Remember who started the thread.

Best regards,

Well how about this classic old "one hit wonder" from your favourite era, to start things off then?

The tale is a bit of a sad one though - the poor guy is heartbroken! But it's a nice little song despite that. And there is some stunning, er, "scenery" in the video to admire...

How about songs from the late 1970s?

I remember a rock group called The Ozark Mountain Dare Devils.

Now, don't let the redneck sounding kind name fool you. They were a rock group and pretty damn good.

Here is a list of their songs with YouTube videos.

Ozark Mountain Daredevils - If You Wanna Get to Heaven You Gotta Raise A Little Hell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYvOsnhV ... re=related

Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Spaceship Orion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iiAX6xBWxo

Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Within Without
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57Tky33w ... re=related

Chicken Train / Ozark Mountain Daredevils
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSZSxyCt ... re=related

Now this one does sound Hillbilly, but otherwise, most of their songs were rock.

Here are the lyrics to Chicken Train

Chicken Train

Chicken Train, runnin' all day
Chicken Train, runnin' all day
Chicken Train, running all day
I can't get on
I can't get off
Chicken Train, take your chickens away

Lazar beam, in my dream
Lazar beam, in my dream
Lazar beam, in my dream
I can't get on
I can't get off
Lazar beam is like a sawed off dream

Chicken Train, runnin' all day
Chicken Train, runnin' all day
Chicken Train, running all day
I can't get on
I can't get off
Chicken Train, take your chickens away

My favorite one is Spaceship Orion.

How old is too old?

Recently I have been listening to a lot of Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi. Tastes change as you get older. I used to think Mozart and Vivaldi were weak and boring, and I would only listen to what I called loud "newer, faster and louder" classical music, namely Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. (Yeah, I know all those "new" guys have been dead a long time, but I think they are new-er than the other three guys.)

Now, I don't know much more about classical music than the average bear (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI1T05y6 ... re=related), but I've decided that the oldest of the composers are best if you are looking to take life slower, and to deflate your tire pressure a bit. It is not necessary to listen intently to the music, but it can be nice to have it chirping away in the background. Maybe if they played little music at the freaking chess club instead of making us listen to raggedy old men huffing and coughing I might want to go back? Dunno, just a thought...

Another tune I like after particularly stressful days is this:

(The original song is from the early 70's, even though this is a modern version from the 90's.)

I listen to a fair bit of old music as well. It would depend on what you consider old music, but some of my favorties lie between the time periods between 1600 to 1920.

Here one that I listen to from time to time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvm2ZsRv3C8

It's Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin, his very first piece of music he wrote from what I remember. But I don't know much else. As far as composers go, I only know Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Elgar, Vivaldi, Debussy, Mozart, and a couple of others whose names I seem to have forgotten. What I look for in this type of music, well it would depend on my mood really. Sometimes I need something fast or at other times, I need music that is mellow.

As far as music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. I'm severly lacking knowledge of what music was performed during those periods. I'll probably take a listen to some of the music that other people have posted in the past. That's if I have the time though, and I would have to clear my mind of other music I like so I would not judge unfairly.
Every ending is a new beginning.

Does 90's rap count as old music? That's when hip-hop was just gaining popularity, so surely it should be considered as old music.

This thread needs a video game version.

I always think I'm up on current music, but I end up not knowing many of the artists and songs at the Grammys, AMA's, etc. But my wife reminds me that I like "classic rock" -- IOW, I know and like the music that was "current" 20, 30, or 40 years ago...

Well, speaking of "classic rock," the 9th of July is Bon Scott (ex lead singer of AC/DC) 's birthday. He would have been 65 this year.

So here's a classic old film-clip from the early days of AC/DC.

They've certainly come a long way from making film-clips of themselves playing on the back of a flat-bed truck driving through the streets of the Melbourne CBD in 1976...
