Re: The What Song Are You Listening To Thread

There was a song that came out back in 1972 which I liked very much.

It is, Sunshine (Go Away To Day) and it expresses my sentiments exactly.

Have you ever been bossed around by someone who presumes that he can control your life?

Well, my own younger brother is like that. He likes to try to boss me around.

He is tall and skinny, he's younger than I am, but he looks much older, about 20 years older than I look. Compared to him, I look almost infantile!

OK. Today I went out shopping, and I'm getting ready to stock up on some snacks for New Years Eve, and on New Years Eve, I like to have a couple of Bloody Marys.

A Bloody Mary is a tall glass of V8 Tomato Juice with 2 shots of Vodka and you add some Worcestershire Sauce, some soy sauce, and some Tabasco Sauce or Hot Sauce, a pinch of salt, some pepper, and you stir it with a stalk of celery. There are variations on the recipe, but that's how I make a Bloody Mary.

I also like Red Beers, which is beer with some V8 Tomato Juice in it, and it's delicious.

And of course, I have a great big bowl of sour cream dip with Ranch Style flavoring, green onion, french onion, some dill. All kind of flavorings to go into the dip, and I also put in some chopped up shrimp and crab meat, and chopped up green olives, and I have chips to go with the dip, and pickled herring on crackers, so I get plenty to eat.

I don't get drunk on New Years Eve. I only have 2 Bloody Marys and a couple of red beers. I can keep a bottle of Vodka in my fridge, and it will last me 2 to 3 years before I need to get any more. I'm really not a heavy drinker. A glutton for food, yes! But a drunkard, no!

Anyway . . . . .

The last time my brother dropped by to visit me was back in late December of 2008. He was staying for about a week while looking for his own apartment. I told him, when ever he was hungry to just go ahead ad get something from the fridge and make some sandwiches.

Well . . . he noticed I had a bottle of Vodka in my fridge, and he started bitching and complaining, then he started to lecture me. He even said that he was going to report me to my therapist for having alcohol.

Now, my therapist and I, we have become very close friends over the years. He's Jewish, and he's like an older brother to me. In fact, he's been more like a brother to me than my own brother. He's a few inches taller than I am, and about three years older. So, he's my big brother, and I'm his "fat little baby brother." That's how close we are.

Well . . . today when I got home from shopping, I called my friend, and I mentioned that I'm making preparations for the New Years Holiday. He asked me if I got some more Vodka yet to replace the one my brother had thrown out, and I said yes I did, and he said "Good for you!" and that what I keep in my apartment is my own damn business.

I then said, my brother reminds me of the words to a song the went, "He can't even run is own life, I'll be damned if He'll run mine!" and I sang that phrase over the phone, and he laughed!

Anyway . . . . .

That inspired me to search for the song on You Tube, and I found it.

Sunshine - Jonathan Edwards
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHRxQo2u ... re=related

And here are the lyrics to the song.

Sunshine (Go Away Today)
Jonathan Edwards

Sunshine go away today!
I don't feel much like dancing.
Some man's gone, he's tried to run my life.
Don't know what he's asking.

He tells me I'd better get in line.
Can't hear what he's saying.
When I grow up I'm going to make it mine.
(I've already grown up, but I'm still growing out!)
But these aren't dues I been paying.

(Chorus)
How much does it cost? I'll buy it.
The time is all we've lost, I'll try it.
But he can't even run his own life,
I'll be damned if he'll run mine!

Sunshine go away today!
I don't feel much like dancing.
Some man's gone he's tried to run my life.
Don't know what he's asking.

Working starts to make me wonder where,
The fruits of what I do are going.
He says in love and war all is fair.
But he's got cards he ain't showing.

(Chorus)
How much does it cost? I'll buy it.
The time is all we've lost, I'll try it.
But he can't even run his own life,
I'll be damned if he'll run mine!

Sunshine come on back another day.
I promise you I'll be singing.
This old world, she's gonna turn around.
Brand new bells'll be ringing.

Yeah! I'm making this my theme song!!!

And here's another You Tube Video of the same song, but this time, with a singing car! Yeah! That's right! A singing car!

All I want to hear from an ex-jock is "Will that be paper or plastic?" After that he can shut the fuck up!

I didn't know that Christine's younger brother showed any musical talent.

At the moment, I am currently listening to:
Boston - More than a Feeling (1976).
Here is a YouTube link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm_-sW4Vktw
They've recently been using this one on some TV advert over here. Being a 70's and 80's buff I instantly recognised this one whilst seeing the advert earlier on and searched for it instantly after my programme. Found it on one of my classic rock compilations. I forgot how good this one was. Excellent rock song. I get far "more than a feeling" whenever I hear this graceful tune! (Not to mention all old music. It's not just the 80's I love... 70's, some 60's and a bit of 50's are also good in my book too. But nothing recent... do I have to remind you?...)

Queen - Doing All Right (1973)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V3ZH_F- ... re=related
I like the way this one suddenly switches from being a gentle ballad piece to HARD ROCK!!!!!! This technique of quickly switching between different musical styles in the same song was to be employed in a slightly different way in that great magnum opus of Queen's two years later, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Do I ever listen to anything that's not old? Well, I'll let you be the judge of that.
At first I could have sworn this was an American song, but after a bit of research, I now realise the band's British. Oh, we do learn new stuff every day, don't we.

Thank you I_like_1981.

I love that song.

Right now, with all that has been happening this past week I feel like I'm on the bridge over the River Kwai.

Anyway, thanks for the song. I loved this one.

Yeah, you just don't get such graceful, breathtaking music like that nowadays.
Music today is only about making money and putting on wild shows at concerts. The art of music is slowly declining now we have little in the charts other than a bunch of unoriginal, teenage-gangsta-orientated bands and we have come to hearing stuff like this every time we go out into the shops or put on the radio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47Fbo4kU2AU
Look at the obscene number of views this crap has.
How people have forgotten what makes a great song.
Does this have any true talent in it at all? Is this what music has come to?
They wonder why I do not support the charts.

I have to confess, I have been listening to a lot more 70's than 80's recently.
I seem to be betraying my traditions! What have I become? :o

It's called "thinking outside the box" and there's nothing wrong with that.

Sometimes it's good to explore different types of music that you usually don't listen to most of the time.

For example, I don't care too much for country music if it's the redneck boo hoo cry in your beer type of music.

But there are some country songs I like, such as Colorado Rocky Mountain High or The Highway Man and a few others.
