Let me prepose a question!
Alrite so a friend sent me this site and was laughing and joking about how there are people out there who really hate sports! Since my family, and all my friends are hardcore sports fans I guess I never really noticed how much some people just don't like sports! So I came on here to get a look at some of the opinons of people that aren't in to sports and what reasons! My fiance is definatly not a sports fanatic, she will come to football games or hockey games with me if I ask her but I would be very very surprised to come home and find her watching it on TV! But anyways to the point I was just wondering if you actually had a legitamite reason for not like sports! Everyone either says the sports are nothing but a bunch of gays touching themselves or say that the creators of this site or nerdlings that were never good at sports! So please can you provide any other reason as to why you don't like sports or is it simply because you think that everyone involved in it is a gay?

We're happy to have a conversation with you. We'd love to talk seriously (you may not believe me), but when we get people coming on here with an asshole attitude, we give it right back. Even if they do come on with a serious question, when we answer, they tend not to take it and start acting superior.
Anyway, the reason we hate sports (or in some cases, just have a dislike for them), is because it is pushed onto us by the sports fans. Now, when we say 'sports fan', we don't mean every single sports fan out there; our definition means the ones who practically demand everyone like sports and call those who don't 'gay', 'unpatriotic', etc. It's got nothing to do with us being picked last or sucking at sports or anything like that. I'll admit that the majority of us have a bigger problem with the sports fans (this website's definition) than with the sports themselves. The truth is -- we find sports boring. I know, you think it's weird, right? It's an opinion. There are things some people find engaging or exciting that others don't. I'm sure you can think of a few.
Another thing is the constant praise of sports. At the risk of sounding like an asshole (or more of one ), we see it as a pasttime being glamorised for no reason. You can give all the reasons you like, but you won't convince us. I could try and give you reasons to like something I like, but all the reasons in the world won't sway you.
One final thing we have a problem with is the inordinately huge sums of money players get for this. I'm not saying they shouldn't get paid, as it is their job, but why should they make more money in one month than the average joe does in five years? Do you know what all that money could go towards, instead? I'm not trying to sound like a prick, I really am, but it's hard to express your tone accurately in text.
Again, we'll gladly talk to you, as long as you don't start flaming us or begin acting superior. All we have been getting here are flames and it's hard to have a civilised talk when the other party is constantly screaming "fuck you fag!"

That was very well said. Civil and conciliatory. I feel about the same. I have nothing against sports themselves either. I just never developed an interest in sports. Baseball, football, basketball, you name it -not interested. And, because I was never interested I never learned anything about them. But I get confronted all the time by people who expect me to know what they're talking about when they start talking about sports--it's as if a Japanese person walked up to me and started talking Japanese and expecting me to know what he was talking about. I don't of course. But that doesn't bother me. It is something of an awkward moment when you try to explain that you don't watch sports but that's sort of understandable. But it's the all too common response after explaining that I don't watch sports: stunned silence and the inevitable, "are you gay?" that bugs me. Why does everyone have to be a sports fan? I could say I don't watch the Fear Factor TV show and nobody would care. I could say I don't floss daily. Nobody would care. I'm not religious. Who cares? But if you say you don't watch sports all of a sudden everybody wants to gang up on me! It's like sacred territory. Do NOT say you don't like football.Skul wrote:We're happy to have a conversation with you. Thinking logically, you would think that when the overwhelming majority is into a certain practice --loving football for example --that they would not care if a few people didn't love football. Why should they care? Their hobby isn't threatened. But they DO care! Everyone must love football or be exposed for the communist, child-molester fags they are! Is that illogical or what?
So anyway, people who aren't into professional sports are a relative minority. They have been persecuted for their preference their entire lives. Is it too much to ask that this small group maintain a tiny website in a corner of the internet where they can commiserate with each other ? I have to say, for me, it is a joy to find other people who don't like sports. It makes me feel normal again. And I think that there are many more people out there who really don't care about sports but go along to appear normal. This website is for them too --to encourage them to do what they feel is right.

Well said Ray.
There are more non-sports fans out there than these sports fanatics realize, but unfortunately in this day and age everyone and I mean everyone, to put it bluntly, have a constant need to be part of the crowd. To do what every other person does. It's called the herding mentality, a need to be a member of the herd.
I would like to relate a story. My wife works at a hotel and there's a television in the breakfast area and some belligerant sports fan came in and turned the channel to sports and cranked the volume, even though it's posted that the television should stay on one particular channel. This sports fan was joined by a few more of his rude, pushy "buddies" and they proceded to make asses of themselves. Doing here job she turned the TV's channel back and the volume down. They immediately engaged her with remarks like "Hey bitch!" and "What? Don't you like sports?". She replied that she didn't and of course that's not what sports fans wanted to hear, so one of them asked her "are you from another planet, bitch!"
This is the mentality that we're talking about. Sadly, in my experience with other sports fans and ex-friends, this is the mentality of the majority of sports fans. Basically it boils down to If you don't like sports, there must be something wrong with you, and that is bullshit.

I hope that crowd got banned for life. But I bet they didn't. People are too tolerant of that kind of behavior. They've come to expect it from sports fans. I bet you wanted to go down there and clean house when you heard that. If I was a cop I would have tasered all of them. Made 'em dance like electrified monkeys.
That's why you won't catch me in a sports bar --I can't stand the type of people who travel in packs and act like bullies because they outnumber you. And hide behind the acceptance of sports as an excuse for their behavior.

Hey guys I've been really really busy with work lately but I really wanted to come back and see what you guys had to say! I'll be honest I appreciate you guys to take the time to cool off from the a-holes that come on here to answer my question sensibly! And like some of you said it actually does surprise me that there are people out there who totally hate sports! Not meant as an insult but you certianly are a minority! I'm definatly not going to try and convince you to like sports cause as you say there is no way to just like you probably couldn't convince me to go to an Opera, or a musical theater production its just not my taste!
One thing that I totally agree with you Skuls on though is the amount of money sports individualls are payed! Its totally retarded and I don't understand it at all! There definatly should not be that much cash thrown to a 20 guys feet just to skate on some ice, or run onto a nice field with a bunch of people around them! But the thing that bugs me the most is that it's mostly sports fans faults themselves simply because they pay the large sums of money to go to games, and to drink beer or even eat a hot dog at games! My girlfriend and I went to an NHL hockey game in Toronto this past winter! Tickets only cost us about $45 each which is reasonable but in order for each of us to get a beer it cost damn near $20! It blew me away we walked up to the counter and I saw the price and said to the lady "wow, I don't want to drink that bad!"

I think everyone here appreciates your civil tone. It's nice to be asked in a nice way and then to get an intelligent response in return. To be honest, I expected your response to be: FAGS!i_love_chicken wrote:Hey guys I've been really really busy with work lately but I really wanted to come back and see what you guys had to say! But I disagree about being in the minority. Many people, if not half the population, don't like sports. They're just too polite to tell you when you're going on and on and on and on and on about the BIG GAME. Next time you start to blather about sports, watch your audience's behavior. Yawns and non-participation are not signs of "losing" a conversation. They're signs of disinterest.
People have a tendency to think that people are pretty much alike and have common interests. They tend to think that whatever they like, everyone else likes too. You must recognize this natural trait to avoid boring those around you! Everyone doesn't like sports --it just seems that way because the minority who does is so vocal.
And the big companies' attempts to capitalize on the sports market with continuous references to sports in TV commercials implies that the majority like sports when, in reality, they don't!

You know what SpeedofLeicht I think I have to agree with the sports haters on this one! I've actually looked through most of the threads and almost every single time its a sports fan that starts the name calling crap! I'm not going to say that I agree with them for not liking sports but you can't force somebody to like something that they don't! I hate cooked peas and no matter how many times my mom told me I couldn't leave the table until I ate my peas, I still don't like them! So what are you really going to achieve by calling someone who hates sports a fag, or a nerd!?! Definatly not there respect! There is only one way to try and make a non-sports fan into a sports fan and thats to show them the game, telling them how its played and then let them make there own decision! I would love for my g/f to get into hockey or football but the matter remains that she just isn't interested and probably will never be! Its really not that hard to understand why someone doesn't like sports and just because some of us follow them like they are gods doesn't mean that everyone has to!
I guess your right to Ray the vocal sport haters are more the minority! Like i've just said my g/f is definatly not a sports fan but she won't down talk sports around me unless we are just joking around!

I've actually tried to sit through football (soccer) matches, but I could never get interested. I could never see anything to get so passionate about. To me, it's just a bunch of guys kicking a ball about, no different to a group of boys in the park kicking a ball about. The only difference is that on TV, loads of people are watching and the players are getting paid for it.
In high school, I quite enjoyed playing badminton, but not to the extent that I would go and join badminton clubs and watch it on TV (I don't think it's televised, anyway), but playing it recreationally was fun. I have to say that the meanest opponent in badminton is a wall. As someone once said: "Never play badminton against a wall -- they're relentless!" (or something like that).
In my primary school years, I tried rugby for a few weeks, but I quit, because running around in the freezing cold, throwing a ball back and forth is just not my cup of tea.
A lot of the content on this site is in jest and I'm sorry that many of you can't accept the fact that we don't like the same things as you.

See Skul that is exactly what I mean, you tried to watch a soccer game and never liked it! Thats fine by me I wouldn't try to shove soccer down your throat because you've experienced it and it wasn't for you! Even me personally as a sports fan find soccer to be dull at times so I actually agree with you! I can't stand to sit through a full soccer match!
I just never could get into sports, which is probably quite an accomplishment when you grow up surrounded by football fans. None of it rubbed off on me. I never enjoyed playing sports either, except maybe a very informal game of volleyball with friends at recess, if that counts (basically just hitting the ball to each other. We didn't even use a net!). When having to play sports against my will, however, I just remember being really bored and wondering when it would be over. Actually watching a game though...even more boring. There were times when I was forced to sit through an entire game, and those were some of the longest hours of my life. Especially since I didn't even care who won anyway.
I also don't like the way society seems obsessed with sports, and expect everybody to be. There is WAY too much importance placed in sports. New Orleans was devastated by a flood, lots of people were homeless, the city claims to be broke (which I am skeptical about, but that's another story), and yet they somehow managed to scrape together enough money to fix up the football stadium. Which is wonderful and magical, and woe to anybody who dares to question that.

That's a perfect example of what I consider to be sports insanity. Thousands of residents probably are still homeless or without the city services they're used to and yet the city repairs the stadium first! What kind of &^%$#@! sense is that?! I didn't know that but I can easily believe it.abitagirl wrote:I just never could get into sports, which is probably quite an accomplishment when you grow up surrounded by football fans.
