You're absolutely right when you say that if a difference of opinion is based solely on subjective tastes, there would be no debate about it. Who's going to argue over their favorite ice cream? But for some people the issue of sports (which really is a number of different issues) involves much more than subjective tastes. Sometimes there's even a lot of anger involved. It's a lot like an ideological conflict in politics. Most of the energy is not spent trying to understand the other side, but is devoted to proving the other side wrong. Two guys from dissimilar backgrounds learning about each other in an exchange of comments might be more interesting and productive than name-calling, but the latter can be quite entertaining as a show. Most people love a good fight, but isn't a fight some kind of a sport? In other words (lest I forget after spouting so many words), people come here to debate because there's more involved than just subjective tastes.Craig Storm wrote:People like what they like and dislike what they dislike. If their tastes are subjective, then why come here to debate it?Polite24 wrote:People like what they like. You don't have to make excuses for what you enjoy watching or spectating. As long as it's within the realm of the law, of course.
